Finally available in the U.S., this Canadian bestseller is a romantic and atmospheric tale of two teenage girls caught in the world of Faerie.

When she arrives in Ireland to visit her cousin Findabhair, American Gwen expects a fun backpacking trip to sites of the fairy lore they're both fascinated with. What neither cousin knows is that it's the summer of the Hunter's Moon, a dangerous time for mortals to meddle in the kingdom of Faerie. The girls camp out, and deep in the night Finn is kidnapped by the handsome Faerie king! In Gwen's quest to save her cousin, across beautifully evoked settings of modern-day and mystical Ireland, the spunky heroine's biggest challenge may be convincing Finn she needs to be saved! This is the first in a much-lauded and best-selling series from Canada by O.R. Melling, praised as "great stuff, beautifully told" by the Toronto Sun. It's been updated and expanded and is perfect for teen girls who like the work of Anne Rice, Holly Black, and Annette Curtis Klause.

Editorial Reviews

This comical yet touching fantasy adventure will keep the reader engaged. The main character, Gwen, is always obsessed with food, which provides comic relief. Findabhair, Gwen's cousin, acts as a foil for Gwen, adding further humor. The relationship between the two cousins is heartfelt, especially the lengths Gwen goes to in trying to save Findabhair. Against the backdrop of Irish folktales and culture the adventure is played out. The characters undergo a transformation as they fight against the evil forces of the isle. Every Hunter's Moon a sacrifice is required of the mortals by this evil force. The fairies must offer up this sacrifice, until the heroines come along. Female readers will appreciate the fact that this book has a heroine who is fully human yet strong and adventurous. Hopefully a new addition to this series will be soon forthcoming, as the author is quite talented in her descriptive skills. 2005, Amulet Books, 284 pp., Ages young adult.

School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-Idealistic Findabhair and her cautious cousin Gwen have always shared a love of fantasy and hunted for a door into other worlds. The teens plan to spend their summer hitchhiking through Ireland, but when Findabhair is abducted from a barrow by the King of the Faeries himself, Gwen has to become self-reliant and overcome her fears in order to rescue her cousin. When she finds a gateway into the Faeries' world, she is unprepared for the beauty of their land, and for her cousin's decision to stay. Complicating the matter is Gwen's memory of the words from a dream: "I, too, was the Hunted and the Sacrificed." Fearing for her cousin's life, Gwen must take help in whatever form it comes to see Findabhair safely delivered from the Faerie lands. Originally published in Ireland (1992) and Canada (1993) to much acclaim, this novel is a compelling blend of Irish mythology and geography. Characters that breathe and connect with readers, and a picturesque landscape that shifts between the present and the past, bring readers into the experience. Melling's taut plotting, with its unexpected turns, moves the story quickly to a climax and leaves readers wanting more. Fortunately, this is the first book in a trilogy.-Melissa Moore, Union University Library, Jackson, TN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Against a detailed backdrop of Ireland new, old and very old, friendships form, adversaries become allies and romance blooms as an ancient evil demands its due. Hitchhiking around Ireland, Findabhair and her American cousin Gwenhyvar daringly roll out their sleeping bags in a barrow at Tara-and Gwen wakes up alone, her companion having accepted an invitation in the night from Finvarra, Faerie's king. With both magic and mundane help from a succession of friendly strangers, Gwen pursues the seelie court to get her back, a mission that turns particularly urgent when she learns that Findabhair has really been taken as a sacrifice to Crom Cruac, a monster driven from heaven even before the time of the elves. But Finvarra has fallen in love with his new consort, as she with him, and so Gwen suddenly finds herself gathering a band of modern-day heroes (plus one immortal) to defy the looming, evil Worm. Pausing only for lush descriptions of the landscapes and food in Ireland and in Faerie both, Melling opens the first US edition of her trilogy on a strong note, with a tale, romantic on several levels, that culminates in a heavy sacrifice. Mesmerizing!

Although I loved the cover, I was unprepared to love the book as much as I did! The characters are wonderfully written and melling writes about Ireland in a way that makes you feel, smell, and see the environment. She writes of Faerie as though she was once the queen of Faerie herself. I couldn't put it down. It makes me wish that there were fairies in real life. Read it. You won't be dissappointed!

    you must read this!!!

My self, being a fantasy lover, came across this book by accident and i'm soooo glad i did. I mean you accually couldn't guess the ending! 'Don't you hate when that happens!' And O.R Melling was so descriptive when he talked about Ireland. I even looked up the stuff he had in his book and it's ALL real. And his other book , Summer King, is to die for! So... in conculsion, READ THIS BOOK!!!

    I just visited Ireland--sort of!

Ok. First, I'm an adult, second, I love fantasy and Fairies. I've read my share of books. Now, O.R. Melling has done something unique. She has litterly taken my mind to Ireland! I could see, hear, smell and touch the country. Her descriptions were elegantly woven into the story (Cozy, like a warm blanket on a cold night). Also, there was an American character, who, was lost in Ireland (Like I would be). So I learned as the character leaned. This is a wonderful book, that grows in power as one reads it. It has interesting twists and turns,(like the roads in Ireland, or so I'm told) till you just can't figure the ending (I hate figuring endings early in the book don't you?) So the ending was really great and left one wanting some more please! I thank O.R. Melling. not for just writing a wonderful book, but for taking me to Ireland and allowing me to visit a special place. I may never travel there in person, but through this wonderful, magical, book I was transported there. That, my friend, is a special talent and O.R. Melling is truly a gifted writer. I would recommend this magical book to anyone, young, or old. If you buy it, (In my opinion, a bargain at twice the price) you too can visit Ireland, and perchance you've been there before, you can revisit this enchanted land and leave with a new insight, of the ancient land, and then you will understand the talent it took to write this lovely book. BRAVO! Is the one word to describe it.

    Enter Farie

Read this book and you will enter fairie. The descriptions are beautiful. Some of the characters pop out of nowhere without any depth but it is easy to overlook it because of the magic of the story. It makes me wonder if O.R. Melling was a guest of the fey.

    Undescribable!!!

I was so into this book. I fell in love with the characters as if they were real. I was hooked the moment I started reading this book. This book is filled with so much passion and love, I have learned new feelings. This book also made me feel stupid, because I cried for sadness then I cried for joy. Everyone should read this book, regardless of your particular taste in genre. Absolutly AMAZING. Anyone who did not or doesn't liek this book is CRAZY!!

    This book was so good!

This book was awsome.. I loved it, I would give it 5 stars easily. In this book Gwen and Finibaihar (dont know if that is spelled right) go through many challenges. This book is based in Ireland, and is about fairies, and other superstitons. Gwen has to save her cousin, and meets and makes new friends to help her along the way. I loved this book I hope you do to.

I good read on a rainy day

I would have preferred to check out the book from the library rather than spendng the money and adding it to my library. I thought it was going to be a must have for my collection so I bought the whole series. Then I thought it might just be the first story in the collection that was lacking and it would pick u with the other novels, I sson learned that was not the case.

It was a good read - not great, there wasn't anything memorable in the story.

What I did really like, is that it took place in Ireland and it introduced you to their brogue. It also, slightly made you feel like you were sightseeing along with the characters.

This book was actually really good. I'm shallow when it comes to books, and I do judge a book by its cover... and the cover was, for a lack of better words, seriously cool. I loved how she *Melling* incorporated gaelic phrases and words...too cool. I have to say though, it was a bit anti climatic...but, all in all, was a really good celtic tale. Heh, I wanna read the sequel
