Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“The sweet story is filled with movement and excitement as the animals happily rush to witness the event. Acrylic spreads are bright and cheerful, and the simple text is done in bold, colorful type with exclamation marks galore. This charming story celebrates the anticipation of a new life and its long-awaited appearance.”—School Library Journal, starred review

“A deceptively simple, joyous offering, this will surely enliven story hours, and its enthusiastic tone may rub off on kids who are facing the impending arrival of a new sibling with decidedly less eagerness.”—Booklist, starred review

Children's Literature - Curry Coates
The rooster on the farm begins the story by yelling, "Hurry." The goat seems to be the first to hear the call and replies, "Coming! Coming!" Then, the duck, swimming in the pond with her ducklings, yells to them, "Ready? Ready?" All of a sudden, they begin to leave the pond and yell to their mother, "Yes! Yes." The mother cow then tries to get her calves to go. When she says to them, "Quickly! Quickly!" they reply, "Can't! Can't!" The calves do not think that they will be able to make it, but the mother keeps encouraging them. The sheep have gathered and are all on their way when the dogs catch up with them and encourage them to go faster. The pigs come next and insist that the piglets "Run! Run!" By this time all of the animals on the farm are nearing their destination when they hear the rooster yelling for them to hurry. As they arrive at the barn, they see the rooster, the hen, and a nest with an egg in it. They all get quiet and watch closely as the egg begins to hatch. This book, with its big, colorful illustrations and "tellable," repetitious text, is great for young readers. The visuals convey a sense of motion throughout this harried story, and it helps young readers think about life and life cycles on the farm. Reviewer: Curry Coates

PreS-Gr 1
The calm of a bucolic farmyard with its grazing sheep and tranquil cows is shattered by a rooster shouting, "HURRY! HURRY!" "COMING! COMING!" answers a jumping goat. "Ready? Ready?" asks a duck of her three ducklings, who respond, "Yes! Yes!" as they lift out of the water and fly toward the barn. Pigs and a sheepdog join the throng standing inside the barn door watching as the newest member of the farm family pecks its way out of an egg. "CHEEP! CHEEP!" and "I'm here! I'm here!" are its first words to the animal community, which greets the arrival with limbs flung high in triumph. The sweet story is filled with movement and excitement as the animals happily rush to witness the event. Acrylic spreads are bright and cheerful, and the simple text is done in bold, colorful type with exclamation marks galore. This charming story celebrates the anticipation of a new life and its long-awaited appearance.

    Great with song

My daughter fell in love with this book after learning to "sing" it at our local library's story time.

The song simply extends upon the text. For example although the words on the first page only say "Hurry, hurry." The song extends it to "Hurry, hurry said the rooster, hurry, hurry cock-a-doodle-do." In this way it becomes very fun and engaging.
