Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Josie Martin Bowman, RN, MSN, PhD (East Carolina University )
Description: This is a thorough overview of all body systems with a focus on the areas of fluids and electrolytes, cellular aberrations, and acid-base imbalance that prepares nurses for an unexpected occurrence in patient.
Purpose: The author discusses how a simple patient or procedure can easily turn into an emergency situation. The book is intended to arm nurses with the medical-surgical knowledge they need to respond to these situations.
Audience: It is written for nurses new to practice or to a medical-surgical setting, but it also can be used by new graduates in preparation for the licensing examination. The author encourages new graduates to start in medical-surgical settings prior to moving to specialty areas, which is not as common in today's healthcare environment.
Features: To keep readers on their toes, the author presents a "deadly dilemma" that describes the changes that can rapidly occur in patients. Tables and illustrations highlight points of concern and other important information. The book suggests websites that readers can access for further information, and a companion CD provides practice questions and additional content.
Assessment: This book is easy to use, concise, and clearly written, which makes it a good review. I would recommend it to beginning practitioners and those studying nursing.
