PreS-Gr 2-For readers who haven't seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, this book will not have much appeal. It is a lullaby, composed by the Shermans for the movie, about a journey across the ocean to a far away place, over the span of a day and night. The illustrations, featuring sea-going mice, are full of detail and odd perspectives; thus, they are more suggestive than representational. A third of each left-hand page is devoted to a framed verse of the song and a picture of the mice. This section is separated by a black line from the rest of the spread, which features another varying frame for the action, with central emphasis on a sun/moon character. The surreal and hyperreal illustrative style suggests that this is a fantasy of rich and vibrant experience. But by itself, the text is odd, and the illustrations are hard to fathom. The score of the lullaby squeezed into tiny type on the final pages does not make much sense, either.-Ruth K. MacDonald, Bay Path College, Longmeadow, MA
