Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
Part of the series "A Great Idea," which conveys techniques to limit environmental damage, this book focuses on the development of hybrid automobiles, the history of auto-making, and its future. The first chapter opens with a dramatic quotation from a gas station attendant during the 1979 U. S. gas shortage. Having pulled readers into the issue, the chapter continues with information about ways that cars contribute to the energy crisis and explains the value and disadvantages of electric cars. With an emphasis on one particular manufacturer, Chapter 2 describes the difficulties of developing hybrid cars, including one from the early 1900s. Chapter 3 branches out to include other manufacturers, focusing on the marketing and business side of hybrids. The final chapter discusses other possibilities, such as plug-in cars and hydrogen fuel cells. Interspersed throughout the text are helpful sidebars and photographs that contain or illustrate technical information and anecdotes. It concludes with a glossary of terms, which are highlighted in the text, and a bibliography for further study. This would be an appropriate and timely book for students assigned to report hybrid cars. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
