Like 311, Los Angeles quintet Linkin Park use two vocalists to capture alternate ends of the sonic spectrum. Chester Bennington provides angst and vulnerability with his alt-rock roar, while Mike Shinoda offers rancor and rhythm through a percussive hip-hop delivery. But that's where any comparisons to 311 end. Linkin Park are much darker and more

Linkin Park are much darker and more aggressive, peppering their songs with lurching rhythms, dissonant samples, and brash, down-tuned guitars. The band's debut, Hybrid Theory, is impressively cutting-edge, fusing the industrial assault of Stabbing Westward with the insurrectionary charge of Rage Against the Machine. As confrontational as songs such as "Papercut," "Points of Authority," and "By Myself" are, they're infused with enough melody to keep Linkin Park away from the blindly raging terrain of acts such as Slipknot and Mudvayne. And when the Park get kinda sensitive, as on "In the End," which blends delicate piano and soulful vocals with staccato raps and surging rhythms, they reach an entirely new level of hybrid.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Linkin Park originally called itself Hybrid Theory and has retained that phrase for the title of its debut album. The "hybrid" in question is one of rap and metal. The guitars and drums lock into standard thrash patterns, over which singer Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda alternate in furious expressions of rage and frustration. "One Step Closer," the track released to radio in advance of the album's release, is a typical effort, with lyrics like "Everything you say to me/Takes me one step closer to the edge/And I'm about to break."

For the portion of my life that I¿ve listened to and loved music, I¿ve always been attracted to two genres: rock and rap. The moment that I discovered the band Linkin Park was the moment that I had found the perfect group for me to listen to. Often regarded as ¿nu metal or ¿rap rock,¿ Linkin Park takes their genre of music to a whole new level with fast beats filled with energy and enthusiasm as well as rich lyrics depicting struggle, hate, change, and remorse. Linkin Park¿s songs are often regarded as being ¿layered,¿ which adds to the quality of the music. Not only is the quality great, but the variety is unique as well. In their debut album Hybrid Theory, you will encounter meaningful lyrics, heavy guitar riffs, rapping, and the occasional five or ten seconds of screaming. This Grammy Award-winning band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide, with Hybrid Theory claiming title to almost half of them. Linkin Park started out at their peak, releasing the smash hit album Meteora right after their debut album Hybrid Theory. However, once they started exploring other genres of music, their music turned softer and more instrumental. They started rapping less and unsuccessfully transitioned into playing alternative rock. Linkin Park never quite went back to the band that they were in the early 2000¿s, which is another reason why I think Hybrid Theory is such a great album. Linkin Park probably won't go back to the high quality nu metal that they used to play and will most likely never come out with an album as good as Hybrid Theory ever again. Even though it was Linkin Park¿s debut album, I believe that Hybrid Theory was their best work. It is intense, emotional, and a great listen, especially for anyone who enjoys listening to rock or rap. It contains hit songs such as Papercut, Crawling, and In the End. There is no doubt that this is a CD you must check out if you have not listened to it already. Buy the album Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park today; you will not regret it.

This CD is very remarkable because of its obvious adversity in musical style. But what's even more remarkable is that I can place it into my CD Player and simply press play, rather then fishing for singles and media pushed song. The whole CD is great, and my two favorite songs weren't even singles. My only sadness related to this CD is that I strongly doubt any sophomore album they could come up with will meet or surpass this CD.

you know about this? if not, it is basically an album of remixes of songs from the album Hybrid Theory....I know what you are thinking...just an attempt to cash in on the best selling album of 2001...right? Heh. heh.....that was my thought exactly....but, my brother really wanted it so I got it for him and it kinda sparked my interest as i was sampling through the tracklisting..... Jurassic Five, Acelayone, Pharoah Monk and Black Thought all appearing as guest mc's raised my eyebrow before I ever played a track...as for the songs themselves....they are all different sounding, they did a really good job of giving each track a new identity even if this new identity will probably be more appealing to your suburbian hiphop gangsta than the angst-filled metal kid....guitars getting scratched into techno/hip-hop backbeats..vocals gettin sampled in, in a hit and run manner, guest mc's flow , tweaked melodies, new lyrics and altered intent makes this release tower over it's big brother ''hybrid theory'' and worth a little attention from you sometime this summer. P.S.: I feel it should be noted that this review has been written by someone who was not and still is not a linkin park fan....I have no intention of running out and buying the next new linkin park album, nor will i even bother downloading it....i feel that this release will probably end up being an anamoly in their discography, but one I am not embarrased to say i own...

I bought this cd for one song I heard on the radio and have found interest in every song. These guys rock for real. The cd is less expensive than most out there and it is well worth the money.

This is my favorite CD of all time, quite possibly surpassed by Linkin Park's next CD, called Minutes to Midnight which i am excited for too. Linkin Park is one of the most energetic and diverse bands out there, and a great addition to any CD collection

Can you believe that Hybrid Theory has been in my CD player for like...five months??? Don't bother skipping any tracks on this CD, every song is worth listening to! They're all fantastic, if I might say so! I never liked rock music but Linkin Park made a major impact on my taste of music! Linkin Park doesn't cuss in their music, they're not the typical rock stars (sex and drug parties), they're educated and multitalented, and they really DO care about the fans! Great band, great music, great attitude! I couldn't ask for a better mixture of a great band! My highest salute to Linkin Park!

Linkin Park blends rap and rock to form a sound unlike anything I've ever heard. Their lyrics are the most poetic and heartfelt I've heard from a rock band in a long time. Songs like ''Forgotten'' and ''Pushing Me Away'' seem more like poems put to music than songs. They also show their soft side with ''In the End'' starting with a lone piano, building momentum to the middle, where it slowly comes to the lone piano again in the end. This is the one CD in my whole collection that I'm never sick of.

I firsrd ''In The End'' on my schoolbus. I emmidiately fell in love with it. It was so true to me. Then, I stole my brother' burnt c.d. and put it into my c.d. player. I thought ''In The End'' would be the ony coolsong like many other songs. Suprisingly it wasn't. I Loved every song. My favorite would have to be ''Place For My Head''! I even fall asleep listening to Linkin Park. Their poster is over my bed. Can't waitfor their new c.d. later this year!!!

Reanimation was a disappointment. Meteora was excellent. But Hybrid Theory is--and there is no other way to describe it--a work of art.
