Backed by an effusive choir dubbed the Caesar Singers, this is a full-throttle release of traditional gospel and powerful blues. One of the album's most forceful moments, however, comes from its only non-hymn, the in-your-face "How Long Has It Been Since You've Been ...

One of the album's most forceful moments, however, comes from its only non-hymn, the in-your-face "How Long Has It Been Since You've Been Home," a song written by gospel legend Sullivan Pugh. Bishop T. D. Jakes, a bestselling recording artist in his own right, offers a foreword to this collection, and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child duets on "Steal Away to Jesus." With this much star power, Hymns is definitely another keeper.
