Overview

It wasn't a lie when System of a Down said the packaging for Mezmerize and Hypnotize would slot together. Released in November 2005, roughly six months after its counterpart, Hypnotize does indeed feature a tri-fold design. But the extra cardboard slotting's a little extraneous, as are some of the sonic parts on both albums. Truth is the motor for System's spazzy, modernist thrash. It drives the boiling rage in Hypnotize's "Attack," "Stealing Society," and "U-Fig"; on "Holy Mountain," it inspires SOAD to transform the sad facts of genocide into the album's most vicious, powerful, and arresting moment. Of course, truth also drives SOAD to make passionate, if slightly screwy, decisions: Serj Tankian's ADD sputter of "eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em" and "banana banana banana terracotta" on Hypnotize; Mezmerize's detour into celebrity baseball game outtakes on "Old School Hollywood." These moments are head-scratchers, no doubt, but they're integral to the experience -- System of a Down confound and irritate even as they rock. And it's precisely because of that weird aggression/aggravation dynamic that Mezmerize/Hypnotize is as strong a concept/double album as metal can offer in 2005. [The DualDisc edition includes the album in enhanced stereo, a making-of feature, and videos for "B.Y.O.B." and "Question."]

Even though Hypnotize doesnt come out untill next month, i know that Hypnotize is going to be an instant classic. With the strong 800,000 copy debut of May's "Mezmerize", it has strong shoes to fill. Hypnotize will do just that.

I am insanely excited for this album. Just looked at the track list, and that alone is making me go bonkers. Look at Track 12 - 'Soldier Side'. An expansion on the 'Soldier's Side - Intro' track from Mezmerize??? Excellent. Pure brilliance. Just like the cover art is an expansion, so is at least one song! That is awesome. System of A Down is a truly talented, excellent, visceral band, one of my favorites, right up there with TOOL. I cannot freakin' wait for November!!

i have listened to the entrie album on mtv.com the leak, and it is really good. expanding on soldier side is brilliant. however, i find that soad's old albums beat mezmerize and hypnotize....however, this is still a must buy!!!

The second System of a Down album release at same year Hypnotize is a success and is Hypnotizing. The songs Soldier Side, Kill Rock 'N Roll, and all the other songs are great. System of a Down has made a great cd and album.

SOAD is definitely an off-beat band, literally. It's their indiviuality, however, that makes them such an interesting listen. Hypnotize is the first System of a Down album I have bought, and I am very please with it. My personal favorites are "Attack", "Holy Mountains", "Vicinity of Obscenity", and "Lonely Day".

I had never listened to hard rock in my life before a friend got me into SOAD. The first time I heard them was on the radio and on tv with the song B.Y.O.B. I loved it! Now I own every single album and they all rock! I liked every song on this album, but I think the best one is Stealing Society. The guitar sounds awesome, the drums are great, and Serj's voice blows me away! Get this album!

I got into system when I heard lonely day on my friends myspace, i went and got somemore songs, and now i have all the albums! They are all amazing and I don't even have a favorite among all 5 albums. My favorite song off of the album though would probably be Lonely Day or attack. Im really looking forward to Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan's new project Scars on Broadway self title on July 29, 2008.
