Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. FIRE AND WATER

One

HANNAH WILLIS WAS a second-year law student at Virginia, and everything that lay ahead of her seemed bright and promising—except, of course, that she was about to die in these dark, gloomy, dismal woods.

Go, Hannah, she told herself. Just go. Stop thinking. Whining and crying won’t help you now. Running just might.

Hannah stumbled and staggered forward until her hands found another tree trunk to hold on to. She leaned her aching body into it, waiting for the strength to take another breath. And then to move another burst of steps forward.

Keep going, or you’ll die right here in these woods. It’s that simple.

The bullet lodged somewhere in her lower back made every movement, every breath an agony, more pain than Hannah had ever known was possible. It was only the threat of a second bullet, or maybe worse, that kept her on her feet and going at all.

God, the woods were almost pitch-black back in here. A quarter moon drooping over the thick forest canopy did little to light the ground below. Trees were shadows. Thorns and brambles were invisible in the underbrush; they pierced and raked her legs bloody as she pushed through. What little she’d been wearing to begin with—just an expensive black lace teddy—now hung in shreds off her shoulders.

None of that mattered, though, or even registered with Hannah anymore. The only clear thought that cut through the pain, and the panic, was Go, girl. The rest was a wordless, directionless nightmare.

Finally, and very suddenly—had it been an hour? more?—the low canopy of trees opened up around her. “What the…” Dirt turned to gravel underfoot, and Hannah stumbled to her knees with nothing to hang on to.

In the hazy moonlight, she could make out the ghost of a double line, showing the curve of a country road. It was like a miracle to her. Half of one, anyway; she knew she wasn’t out of this mess yet.

When a motor sounded in the distance, Hannah leaned on her hands and pushed up off the gravel. Summoning strength she didn’t know she still had, she stood again, then staggered into the middle of the road. Her world blurred through sweat and fresh tears.

Please, dear God, don’t let this be them. This can’t be those two bastards.

You can’t be so cruel, can you?

A red truck careened around the bend then, coming at her fast. Too fast! Suddenly, she was just as blind as she’d been before, in the woods, but from the truck’s headlights.

“Stop! Please stop! Pleee-ase!” she screamed. “Stop, you sonofabitch!”

At the last possible second, the tires squealed on the pavement. The red pickup skidded into full view and stopped just short of flattening her right there into roadkill. She could feel heat coming off the engine through the grille.

“Hey, sweetheart, nice outfit! All you had to do was stick out your thumb.”

The voice was unfamiliar—which was good, really good. Loud country music was blasting from the cab too—Charlie Daniels Band, her mind vaguely registered, just before Hannah collapsed onto the pavement.

The driver was down there on the road a second later as she regained consciousness. “Oh, my God, I didn’t… What happened to you? Are you—what happened to you?”

“Please.” She barely mustered the word. “If they find me here, they’ll kill us both.”

The man’s strong hands wrapped around her, grazing the dime-sized hole in her back as he picked her up. She only exhaled, too weak to scream now. A cluster of gray and indistinct moments later, they were inside the truck and moving really fast down the two-lane highway.

“Hang in there, darlin’.” The driver’s voice was shaky now. “Tell me who did this to you.”

Hannah could feel her consciousness slipping away again. “The men…”

“The men? What men, sweetheart? Who are you talking about?”

An answer floated vaguely through Hannah’s mind, and she wasn’t sure if she said it out loud or maybe just thought it before everything went away.

    Backfire

    Like some of the other reviews on this book I just read; I too am disappointed. I love the Alex Cross books and can't wait til another one is written but this one along with the last couple are not in the same pace and content that ran through the first Alex Cross books. This was a page turner as well but only for the fact of reaching out to see when something was finally going to happen and become inticing. I do read the Women's Murder Club series also but don't like them as well and this book seemed more along those story lines; just not grabing you by the back of the neck. I like more when James Patterson writes alone not with another author. Really liked the Alex Cross series when they first came out and hope that he gets back to that format.

    Anticlimactic

    I have been a huge fan of the Alex Cross series by James Patterson. I am not a reader, but I have bought each Alex Cross book and complete them rather quickly. Unfortunately, the quality of his last few books have been less than entertaining and resulting in a failure to provide any type of connection to his latest book "I, Alex Cross". Unlike the demented and insanely intelligent minds of the serial killers which James Patterson was able to brilliantly articulate, this leaves the reader feeling let down. In this book Patterson does not even write from the point of view of the killer. There are too many players and not enough development of any of them. The end of the book is a let down and I just hope James Patterson gets back to the mastermind killers of his early Alex Cross novels, or I probably won't be reading any books.

    I, Alex Cross

    I am a big James Patterson fan. He is one of my favorite writers and I was not disappointed in his newest novel.
    This novel is a great suspense which left me wanting to read the next book written by this author. I was not able to put down this book and had to know what happens next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great suspense with lots of twists and turns.

    Trying being a little unbias

    All you Patterson and Alex Cross fans need to go back and read one of the original books and stop being such butt kissers. This book is flat out horrible. From the first part where "a beloved Cross family member is killed" to the conclusion, this book was such a disappointment. Can you honestly remember in any other book hearing about his niece or even anything about his brother?! How "beloved" can someone be when they havent existed for 15 years?
    Zeus? What did he have, all of 10 pages of character development. Why doesnt he go into depth about why he does what he does? Oh yea because then he wouldnt have 100 pages to devote to 90 year old woman whos in and out of consciousness.
    Take the nonsense with Nana Mama out of the book and this this is about 125 pages long. Shrink the font and its under 100.

    Seriously, all you fans need to take a step back and realize that James Patterson is just going to keep pumping out these poorly written books if all you are going to do is praise them.

    While at the beach

    I thought that it was one of his best books. we went to the beach and i took it along, needless to say i didnt get a chance to get in the water, i read the whole book while there.

    His Best

    I have read almost all of Patterson's books. The last two or three were only so-so, and I was afraid this would be another stereotypical Patterson. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this book is the best he has written. Alex Cross is hard to beat.

    Zeus meets Dirty Harry

    What can I say, Patterson does it again, hits it out of the park. I love the short chapters, they make you want to just read one more before you go to bed, and pow!, you have read the whole book. I won't go into detail, anything I said would be a spoiler the story is so compact and dovetailed. Just go get it, you won't be sorry.

    True Alex Cross

    Alex Cross is celebrating his birthday with family when he receives a disturbing phone call. His niece has been found brutally murdered. When Alex goes to identify her remains, he's shocked to learn what's left of her body. Alex takes this case personally as he tracks down a sadistic and ruthless killer.

    Alex Cross, without doubt, is my favorite series. I started reading this series in graduate school and continue to look forward to each November for the latest release. I really like Alex Cross, the man. He's intelligent, dedicated, attractive, a family man and professional. Like any other parent, he tries to balance his home life with his work life. Sometimes he succeeds and other times it hurts him to have to disappoint his family one more time.

    I, Alex Cross, for me, returned to the Alex Cross books of the past. Last year's Cross Country was a miss for me, so I hoped I would enjoy reading I, Alex Cross. And I was not disappointed. As Alex is hunting down a killer, that may be connected with The White House, he's also dealing with an unexpected crisis on home. I won't reveal the details of his personal crisis to avoid spoilers, but I will say the reader feels compassion for Alex as he tries to handle both stressful situations.

    Mr. Patterson did an excellent job with his latest villain. While reading several scenes, I literally squirmed as I pictured what was happening to the victims. And when the killer is finally revealed, I was shocked! I didn't see that coming at all. I, Alex Cross ended perfectly for me. One of my favorite characters has returned to let Alex know he's always watching. The sad part is I have to wait until next November to find out what happens next!

    Good read, but ending was uneventful

    Having read all of the Alex Cross books, my level of enjoyment and satisfaction is trending downward. It seems the past few A. Cross books take us thru the tale and then just wraps it up as if there is a limit on the number of the pages. I wasn't sure where the ending was going to go, it left me dissappointed.

    I, Alex Cross, was one of the best Alex Cross books that James Patterson has ever written.

    This book was riveting, thrilling, but also brought out sadness when Nana Mama was so ill, and the thoughts of those women being murdered and then thrown into a wood chipper like so much garbage. James Patterson has a way of throwing one into the bizzare and then on the next page have one feeling so sorry for the live characters in his books. His TV ad, "You will love this book, or I will have to kill Alex Cross" was right on the money. I can't imagine anyone being able to put this book down until it is completely read.

    Great read...get to the middle and you won't sleep 'til the end

    I agree with the comments about a slow start and a lot of characters, but once you get into the meat of this story, you won't put it down. Slowed me down before work, at work (I have BN e-books on my computer and my Nook), and after work...where I still am at 6:15 on a Friday night. Couldn't wait to get home to finish it. No disappointment here!

    Good but disappointing

    I am an avid James Patterson fan and I simply love Alex Cross. This book was my least favorite to date. It was a quick read - finished in one day and the plot kept you interested, but the villain was not known as a character or as part of the story at all. I would have enjoyed this novel much better if parts of the story had delved into the mind of Zeus. His character was never delved into at all. Why was he doing the things that he did? Did those close to him know what he was doing? These questions were never answered. I was never left disappointed by any of the other Alex Cross books, but this one certainly left me wanting more. I felt let down by Mr. Patterson. I also was able to guess who Zeus was by midway through the book which never happens in a Cross novel. I felt that this book was rushed, written to just get written and done with. Please don't disappoint like that again Mr. Patterson. Your talent is too great for that.

    Ending is rushed

    True James Patterson page turner. Excellent plot. The entire book is filled with details, but the end is rushed and without details. It seemed like Mr. Patterson just wanted to end the book, so he did, without the same consideration to the reader he gave throughout the book.

    I Alex Cross

    This book was excelent, very involved, keep me wanting to listion. I order the audio so I could listion in my car. I work in may car long hours and this was excelent and interestering. I like Alex Crosses books and this was really good. Worth reading like most of his books.

    Another Alex Cross page turner

    I love, love,love this author & these characters. I hate horror movies but I can't wait to get my hands on an Alex Cross story. They are suspenseful and keep me turning the page long after I really want to go to sleep. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

    Just try and put this book down.

    Another stellar work by James Patterson...in the fine tradition of detective Dr. Alex Cross. I read it in just two sittings and wished I already had the next one in the series... It's all vintage Patterson...no disappointing co-authors to contend with. No disappointments here--just leaves you anxious for more!
