Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Harriet Tubman is well-known for leading slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Readers will also learn about her service to the United States during the Civil War, her involvement in the woman's suffrage movement, and how she became a property owner in Auburn, NY. The horrors of slavery and the discrimination she faced are appropriately stated for the third and fourth grade readers who are the target audience of this book. There is just the right amount of information for an introduction to this incredible woman. Moreover, the reader will gain a sense of her courage and care-giving nature. Illustrations, often a half or full-page, are abundant throughout the book and give it a reader-friendly appearance. There are shaded boxes with additional information or summaries of the text. The placement of these informational panels sometimes interferes with the storyline text. Nevertheless, they offer interesting facts about Tubman. There is a good deal of well-presented information. A map of the Underground Railroad and "10 Things You Should Know about Harriet Tubman" are found at the end of the book. Part of the "I Am" series, the backmatter includes a glossary, index, bibliography, and Places to Visit (online or in person) section. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
