This account of one girl's Holocaust experience is rich for its interweaving of autobiography and historical data. At age six, Auerbacher was forced to wear the yellow star that set her apart. Then she was sent to the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. Fifteen thousand children entered that camp, but only a hundred exited alive. And of more than 1000 people who arrived with Auerbacher, only 15 survived. It's a moving story supported by well-preserved wartime photographs and Bernbaum's harsh, spare drawings. The author's ability to survive is linked to her later capacity to translate hardship and tragedy into poetry of hope and perseverance. Her perspective, while chilling, pierces the heart with memorable imagery, such as envying the birds, which are free to fly away from the camp. Ages 11-up. (April)

Gr 4-6 Of the 15,000 children imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp, only about 100 survived. Auerbacher was one of them, and she tells of her experiences in this brief memoir. Auerbacher's poems, incorporated into the text, are reminiscent of the writings in I Never Saw Another Butterfly: Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp 1942-1944 (Schocken, 1977). Both books give a child's perspective on the horrendous conditions in Theresienstadt without bitterness or pessimism. It isn't clear, though, whether Auerbacher's poems were written as a child or as an adult, and they are often awkwardly placed, interrupting the narrative. Bold roughly lined charcoal drawings and numerous black-and-white photographs are included. Bernbaum's drawings are neither as complex nor as symbolic as his oil paintings in My Brother's Keeper: the Holocaust Through the Eyes of an Artist (Putnam, 1985) but they do communicate the incidents described in the text and the poetry with emotional expression. In general, the illustrative material is not well reproduced. In spite of its flaws, this is a readable account that could be useful to children who have read Abells' The Children We Remember (Greenwillow, 1986), which is written on an easier level.     My review for I am a Star

    My Review on I am a Star I am a Star is an interesting autobiography on Inge Auerbacher, a survivor of the Holocaust. It is in the the history genre. I actually read this book for a Social Studies class. Personally, I thought that the book was very interesting and sad. Though it eventually ends with a happy ending, many sad things happen throughout it. I hope you enjoy my review. I am a Star is a sad book about how Inge Auerbacher and how her family is taken to a concentration camp called Terezin by the Nazis. Her family is taken to Terezin on Kristallnacht, or in English, The Night of Broken Glass. On this night there were massive riots against the Jews all over Germany. Throughout this book, she tells the story of her stay at Terezin from 1942-1945. Her tale is very sad and shows how many Jews lived at concentration camps. I hope you will read this book and that you will see how Inge Auerbacher lived. In my opinion, I am a Star has some strengths and some weaknesses. For example, one strength is that it paints a mental picture with its descriptions and it also shows you real photos taken when she was young. I believe that one weakness of the book was that it had too many poems. I would be reading and then it would cut me off and have a poem. I don¿t really like being cut off. Other than this, the book was pretty good and again I hope you read it. In my opinion, there are some people that would not enjoy the book. For example, people who like autobiographies, biographies, true accounts, and history would probably enjoy this book. However, I don¿t think that people who look into the adventure, action, sci-fi, or fantasy genres would particularly enjoy this book. There is not much action or adventure in it at all. I doubt that they would love it as much as history lovers. This concludes my recommendations. My overall opinion of I am a Star was that it was a middle class book. It wasn¿t to good or too bad.In my opinion though, it was a very sad story with a happy ending. The book does have an appealing sense of nature to history lovers. To summarize, it was an exceptional book.

    not quite sure...

    im 11 and im not too sure if i should get this book or not.im a freak for history and espically this time period (dont know why,haha)but,seriously,please help me!!!i want to read up for my social studies class(even tho school just started And my S.S. teacher said we wouldnt get to W.W. 2 until the last week of school) it is so hard to type on a nook color...lol

    This book is truly amazing. It goes on into in depth detail about what Igne's life in a concentration camp was like. I would recomend this book for ever one who is interested in historical non- fiction. What goes on in the story really makes you think

    I am a history freak.

    I got this book because i wanted to see the life of someone who was in the holocaust. Im 11 and i read half of anne franks diary. Inges story is way more freakier, especially the pictures and poems. Im glad i freaking read this, and God bless you Inge! Go history

    So i was going to this gay gypsie bar mitzvah for the disabled and that was when i dicided that the third amendment was realy a bunch of crap so i said to myself why am i going to a gay gypsie bar mitzvah for the disabled anyway. Then i started to think again and i dicided something different. LETS KILL HITLER!!!!! Just kidding actualy lets just erase Nazi Germany off the map! I got tired of having my name a bluish numeral so i joined the Jacobys in the french revolution. Yep that extreme! I found out it was not in fact the french revolution anymore. So i went out with going to Great Britain for a while... A long while!
