Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Charlie and Lola originally created by Lauren Child have moved to the big time as stars on Playhouse Disney. This book is a spinoff from one of the TV programs, and the illustrations are taken from it. Lola is excited: it is Animal Day at school, and the focus is on saving animals. Charlie explains that money is needed to find safe places for animals so they will not become extinct. In some parts of the world, animals are hunted for their body parts for use as jewelry or medicines and their habitants are being destroyed. At the library they learn about a number of endangered animals. Lola decides that she wants to save pandas. To raise the money, they need to find sponsors who will donate if they do certain things such as swimming laps, hopping, or skipping. Poor Lola on the big day wakes up covered with spots and cannot go to school, but no case of the chicken pox will stop our spunky heroine. How she finally gets to raise money is amusing. Great for fans, great for first time readers of the characters.

My children really like Charlie and Lola so when I came home with this book they were thrilled. We often reread it. It follows the mode/trends of the TV show.
