The decidedly edgier sibling's fledgling career high, however, was eclipsed by her lip-sync fiasco on Saturday Night Live. So with I Am Me, the younger Simpson obviously had more to overcome than the sophomore jinx -- a feat she surprisingly accomplishes with aplomb. In fact, Simpson's vocals, post media backlash, sound stronger, while her lyrics are as teen-angst earnest as ever. Musically, the disc is awash with '80s-style synths and swelling guitar riffs; "Dancing Alone" even plants the title of the Cure's "Just like Heaven" in the chorus. Other highlights include "Beautifully Broken," where the raspy singer addresses her humiliation with lines like, "It seems like yesterday my world fell from the sky / It seems like yesterday I didn't know how hard I could cry" and the danceable, Gwen StefaniĀ–reminiscent "l.o.v.e.," which seems to address Simpson's incommunicado relationship with former boyfriend Ryan Cabrera. The punk-pop "Boyfriend" is rumored to be an open letter to actress Lindsay Lohan, denouncing the mean girl's claim that Simpson is dating Lohan's former beau, Wilmer Valderama. With I Am Me, Ashlee Simpson transforms her personal trials into her personal best.
All Music Guide - Eric Schneider
Although Ashlee Simpson had to deal with the Saturday Night Live lip-syncing debacle that followed the release of her successful debut, she still managed to escape the shadow of her older sister, Jessica, and emerged as a popular performer in her own right. On 2005's I Am Me, Simpson clearly revels in her independence and renewed confidence, moving forward with an energetic set of guitar-heavy pop
ock tunes. Though her music still falls into the vein of Avril Lavigne and Hilary Duff, the dense, layered production of multi-instrumentalist John Shanks helps to distinguish the tunes here, which he co-penned along with Simpson.

    i'm just not feeling it

some of the songs are very odd. i don't quite understand why. ashlee is an allright singer and i respect her for coming out from under her sister's shadow but this cd just isn't "wow, she's better than jessica".

    Not Again.....

Okay, I have to admit, I bought her first cd. Since then I have found out there is better music out there, and it is now in the back of my cd collection along with Hilary Duff. I thought first she was a joke, and this cd was just to show the world she was better than her big sister. But she just doesn't know when to stop. i mean come on, L.O.V.E. is such a corny song. I don't own this cd, but don't waste you time. Spend your money on some R.E.A.L. music.

    Not Again!

This is my review, and this is my opinion. She is a horrible "singer'. I would not recommend this cd to ANYONE. And I thought she released her first cd as a mere joke....

    This was interesting. . .

Well, first of all, i have to give the reviewer below props for what he wrote. I laughed for about an hour. It was brilliant. Anyway, the cd was okay. There were some songs that were weird like Burning up and Dancing alone. I do agree that America is under the influence of bubble-gum drop lyrics mixed in with a little lip syncing, but if you dont like it, dont listen to it. All in all, this was an okay cd.

    like i can sing now!

Like wow, i am a singer like my big sister and like am totally a rocker. I have like the biggest fan base amongst 10 year olds and am like so famous, not because of my big sister! I can't wait to like sing live again!!!!!!!! This is an example of the state American music and it's youth is in. Total computer enhanced, manafactured, teen orientated, bubble gum garbage for 12 year olds who dress like adults. Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, whose next? Have a good long look at yourselves America. How about you try and listen to some music actually WRITTEN by the people singing it!

Not as good as Autobiography, but okay.

This album is not as good as Ashlee's first CD Autobiograpy but it has its moments. L.O.V.E, Beautifully Broken, Catch Me When I Fall, and the first single Boyfriend are all pretty good. In Another Life, Coming Back For More, Eyes Wide Open, I Am Me, and Say Goodbye are decent. And Burnin Up, and Dancing Alone are just alright. If you're into Ashlee Simpon and this kind of music then I do recommend this CD, if you aren't then I would pass on it.

    Not like what I expected.

Listening to this album from ashlee simpsons album I am me, I didn't really care for the songs on this album, some of the songs sound the same, and whats the big deal about the song called boyfriend, that is most inappropriate song I ever heard, its like a girl stealing her bestfriends boyfriend, the song sounds kinda slutty to me, and the song called L.O.V.E. she sounds like a drunk robot. and she calls this punk rock, it sounds more like untrained singing to me and she is out of tune, she needs to take more singing lessons and have her voice trained and change her music genre, this is not punk rock.

    Go Ashlee!!

Album is Great. I used to be a BIG fan of Ashlee Simpson-Wentz but ever since she has been hanging out with Nicole Richie, she seems like a whole nother person but Nicole is untalented and a waste so...Ashlee wake Up!!. I seen Ashlee in concert 12/12/05. For her "Boyfriend" tour. EVERY SONG on here is GOOD!!!

Ashlee is one of my favorite artist.

Even though i thought the first album was better than I Am Me. i got to admit the album was good. I liked the tone and it was good for me. i hope third album coming out October 2007 is better than i Am Me. but i give it a 9 out of 10.

good, now that i have your attention. this cd was overall good. but it still wasn't as good as autobiography. 1. Boyfriend- good 2. in another life- odd, but good 3. beautifully broken- best on cd 4.Love- i still don't know what to think of that 5. dancing alone- i don't understand this one, but good music. Ashlee is good. she should try to stick with songs like the ones of her first cd.

    Right on!!!!

At first, when I bought this CD, I was a little nervous of how good it would be, but I love this CD. I just love the songs, Boyfriend, In another life, l.o.ve., Coming back for more, Burning up. But, the best song is, I am me. I would also like to address something another reviewer said, about listening to people that write thier own music. Well, Ashlee Simpson co wrote EVERY song on her CD. Also, she is alot better singer than Gwen Stefani.

    This Album is great!

Ashlee Simpson's sophomore album "I Am Me" is better than the first. This album expresses her feelings of her life and the troubles that she has been thru over the past year. From fighting over a boy to her famous performance on SNL. One song I love the most is "L.O.V.E.", that song is great to dance to with friends.

    Awesome!

I got the chance to hear all the songs on this CD early and they are great!!! I loved her old cd but this one is even better! its way more rock, unlike Ashlee's first one which was more pop. The songs are really deep and you can feel her emotion in them......Definately buy this CD!!!!

    Shes good....

Ashlees a great singer and has been put down since the SNL incident and no she is not trying to be hard rock or punk: she just likes that kind of music. She deserves more credit than most people give her. Its a good album.
