Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One of the "SandCastle" series on building character, this one for transitional readers, I Am Respectful presents the new student who is learning social skills with numerous ways to show one specific, positive, personality trait. The title sentence is short, but its implications reverberate through children's lives. How are they matching up to the ideal? Parents and teachers want to know. To emphasize the featured behavior, its word is highlighted at every page-turn. The kids' faces smiling from the pages of the book are those of everyone's best friends, and their obvious happiness is the best advertisement of all for the practice of whichever virtue Salzmann has chosen to feature. Besides providing many examples of being RESPECTFUL, the author challenges the young reader with these final words, which accompany one child's thoughtful visage, "What do you do to be RESPECTFUL?" Making the elementary student feel like his big brother or sister, a rudimentary index and glossary close out each volume. Clear, colorful images and bold print are immediate and strong attention-grabbers. It is obvious, then, that this whole series is perfect for parent, school, and even Sunday-school read-alongs and talk-alongs in the unending quest for behavioral perfection among the young. 2003, ABDO Publishing Company,
