I Am… Sasha Fierce [Special Edition]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
In non-Deluxe Edition form, Beyoncé's third solo studio album is as concise as 2006's B'day, but it is divided into two discs as a way to emphasize the singer's distinct personalities. It's a gimmick, of course -- a flimsy one. Revealed through interviews in 2005, Sasha was said to be Beyoncé's "stage persona," an embodiment of the outgoing, aggressive, on-stage Beyoncé that doesn't necessarily represent the real Beyoncé. Sasha now has a last name (possibly picked up from Tyra Banks, who maybe took a cue from Klymaxx), and is granted half an album (the second disc) to express herself. These five songs, when compared to the majority of B'day, are actually less fun, less ...

These five songs, when compared to the majority of B'day, are actually less fun, less impulsive, and yes, less fierce. "Diva," a variation on Lil Wayne's "A Milli," is the only track that could go toe to toe with the likes of B'day's "Freakum Dress" or "Ring the Alarm," at least in terms of audacity. At the other end is "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," a dire "Get Me Bodied" retread. Otherwise, the Sasha Fierce half is full of decent, if easily forgettable, upbeat pop. If placed within the context of an album without a packaging ploy, there'd be little evidence that Beyoncé is making a radical progression or being any more bold than before. It would, if anything, be notable as the least R&B-oriented batch of songs she has made -- that is, if it wasn't for the I Am half, essentially a small set of adult contemporary ballads. Acoustic guitars, pianos, strings, contemplative soul searching, and grand sweeping gestures fill it out, with more roots in '70s soft rock than soul. Beyoncé feels each line to the fullest extent, which almost rescues the set's staidness. "If I Were a Boy," while sounding like the watery backdrop for a singing competition finale, turns out to be the album's standout, both for its lyrics and Beyoncé's tormented performance. It could have been the song that broke an unfairly neglected adult-R&B singer like Heather Headley into the mainstream, and don't be surprised if a country artist nabs a CMA Award by covering it. [The Deluxe Edition, released simultaneously with the 11-track version, contains a thicker booklet with more photos and five additional songs, including "Smash into You" (an answer song to Dave Matthews Band's "Crash into Me"?) and "That's Why You're Beautiful" (notable for resembling, bizarrely enough, the melancholy sides of early-'90s indie rock bands like Tsunami and Versus).]
Entertainment Weekly
The first two singles — one from each disc, released simultaneously — demonstrate the contrast between her dueling personae...''Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),'' from the ''Sasha'' half, is all bouncy hand claps and post-breakup sass (''Kept crying my tears/For three good years/You can't be mad at me''). [B+]
Billboard
It's the classic, more timeless R&B songs on the I Am portion of the album that seem like a much-welcomed stretch for the singer.

Not a fan of Beyonce's until this album

I have always understood that Beyonce is talented, but never cared for any of her hit songs. I didn't care for her "bootie shaking" music and never felt the urge to buy any of her albums. Each time her songs came on the radio, I would change the channel. All of this until now. Her new album shows such raw emotion and when I first heard If I Were a Boy, I was astounded to find out that it was Beyonce. This is one album that I actually bought and have enjoyed listening to it. She will never be my favorite artist, but this cd is being regularly played. Each song has been beautifully written and for her previous fans, there are still a few songs on there that resemble her past music. This album is solid proof that she has grown up and is putting herself out there for the public to understand. I really like a lot of these songs, but my favorites would be If I Were a Boy, Halo, Broken-Hearted Girl and her "version" of Ave Maria is amazing, although nothing like the traditional Ave Maria we all know.

    ...

I LOVE this cd it reminds me of when I was in love and how beautiful it was ... If this is a reflection of Beyonce then she is deeply in love with her man ... It is more mature and diffrent from anything I would ever listen to but I like the fact that she is always doing something diffrent from what we are use to ... Oh and Rihanna is not LOL even close to be compared to Beyonce ... Rihanna is tired this is the same person who did Pon de reply r u serious? She struggled for a while trying to find the right look and style to make herself appealing ... The Sasha part of it is a lil unfinished in my opinion but I like it ... My Favs song r ... HELL ALL OF THEM!!! but I dont really like If I Were A Boy

    I Am...Sasha Fierce

I Am...wanting a refund. I am truly disappointed with this album. Her street team did a great job pumping it up, but when it's all said and done this cd just didn't cut it. Others I have spoken to advised Keyshia Cole's cd is much better.

    Ave Maria

I know that Beyonce is a very talented songstress, but when I heard her performance in Ave Maria was phenominal. I didn't know that there was anybody that could re-do such a perfect song and make it BETTER! She is definitly one of the greatest voices of our generation. It was a very moving performance. Many people don't even realize how important this song is to the history of music, but for her to execute it with such perfection is phenomenal. Now if only she could do the whole thing in Latin.

This Album is truly a flop

I am a fan of Beyonce, and I was totally shocked at how lame this album is. I'm glad that I was able to preview the album before having to buy it. I would have really been disappointed if I bought this CD. Believe me, save your money.
