Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"This collection of 20 real-life stories demonstrates lives radically changed by encounters with Jesus Christ from the growing “I am second” movement. Many stories, previously seen as video clips on the Web, are from famous personalities like Josh Hamilton and Brian “Head” Welch. Tommy Cresswell delivers the narratives in a pleasing baritone, capturing individual characters with unique tonal inflections, changes in pitch, and subtle accents. He matches voice to mood to capture the torment behind Michelle’s story of obesity, which sent her “life spinning out of control.” He perfectly renders Josh’s story of exchanging his sports playbook for God’s playbook, then Brian’s story, which begins with a choice between heroin and a telephone conversation. Creswell’s masterful portrayals reveal that belief in Jesus is all about relationship, never about religion."

In reading this book, I was inspired by the many testimonies of famous people. The book tells the stories of athletes, rock stars, reality TV show participants, actors & actresses and other people who I had not previously heard of. The idea behind the I Am Second program was to involve well known people in an evangelistic tool of sorts. Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure you've seen the commercials, billboards, youtube videos, etc. The stories told of lives changed by God, turning away from drugs & alcohol and addictions of other kinds. Each story involves the "turning point" for that person where they realized that God had to come first and they had to put themself in 2nd place. If you enjoy reading biographies & testimonies like I do, you will really enjoy this book! Also, at the end of each person's story, there are web links to visit for other stories with a similar "feel". I am looking forward to watching each of these videos!

This book is a great compilation of stories from real people, many of them well known, who have gone through terrible hardships in their lives ranging from being fired to being sexually assaulted, and addiction to divorce. The stories tell of how these people were able to rise above these setbacks once they realized that they had to give their lives over to God. HE is first, we are second. This book is for everyone becasue everyone goes through hard times in this life. I am a teacher and my students, some as young as 11 and 12, have been able to find a person or a story that they can relate to. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

The day I am Second arrived, my 23 year old daughter picked it up and read it for hours. She loved it and asked for her own copy.

"I Am Second" contains concrete illustrations of how God can and will change people's lives. There are stories from all kinds of people, from every walk of life--athletes, businessmen, actors, soldiers, you name it. No matter who you are, you will find someone here whose life you identify with. I especially like the few instances where you get to see how one changed life effects and changes another life in a later story. (The first two stories are an example of this.) The book also has links and scannable QR codes to the "I Am Second" website where you can view the video of the story you just read, or videos of other stories like it. This book is a great encouragement for the Christian who might be feeling a little cold in his walk, or someone who feels hesitant to share his faith with others. It is also a great book to give to those who are searching. Easy to read, and hard to argue with. I recommend it!

I love a personal narrative – and while this is personal, it’s not about self. It’s about putting yourself 2nd. This book is a book of stories. Personal stories. Accounts of lives that have been changed by someone great than themselves. It’s about what happens when you stop looking out for #1 and realize that there’s much more to life. I remember when I first started seeing the commercials for the I am Second movement. They were intriguing. Then I began seeing the bracelets. After reading the book, I now understand just what it’s all about. I really liked reading accounts from people from different areas of life. Some of them I recognized – Michael W. Smith, Jason Castro, while others were new to me. I appreciated their willingness to share their stories. I wonder how different the world would be if instead of speaking up about what’s wrong with the world, we instead told our stories. That no matter how hard things are or how messed up the world gets, there is more. I gained insight from the Scriptures and I liked that I could read a couple of pages account of a life changed or I could turn page after page and realize just how great and amazing our God is. The best part is that the final chapter lead me to think about my story and about my life and where God belongs and where I belong – I am 2nd.

This is a compilation of stories of people who came to know deep brokenness and at the end of that, the redeeming power of Christ's love. The one red thread you can see throughout all these stories is the search for life’s true meaning and the satisfaction that every one of them couldn’t find in anything other than Jesus. What I enjoyed most about this book was the brokenness that flowed out of every story, the raw emotions and thoughts that everyone shared, the reality of these experiences. It is an easy read and I liked the way it is organized, with pictures so you can put a face on the person who you just came to know. There is also a youtube channel that incorporates all the videos with people’s stories not only the ones that appear in this book, this gives a different touch to the stories. Even though I enjoyed the book I guess I was disappointed in the fact that the stories were a bit short, like I said it is an easy read. I think I would have liked it more if the stories would have been more detailed. Even though I understand the fact that it would have been tough considering that these are not just stories, but real life experiences, nonetheless I think there would have been much more potential focusing a little bit more on the stories.

I Am Second, by Dave Sterrett and Doug Bender The book tells several stories of anonymous and famous that at some point in their lives found themselves in despair for different reasons. They realized that it was happening because they worship things or put other people in first place in their lives. The I Am Second movement advocates that put God first and yourself second and then for all rest be less important, the story is poignant. One of them is the Brazilian MMA fighter Vitor Belfort, who went through many difficulties and today is one of the most successful fighters in the world. The book has a wonderful hardback edition with sleeve and inside photos of the characters, people who give their testimonies to the book, and even a sticker of the movement, and information for those who want to participate. It is an inspiring reading, not only by religion but by force of will of the people to overcome life's obstacles.

I really enjoy the message that this book is trying to give to all of us–Christians and non-Christians– the why we decide to put us Second. At first I thought this book was going to be all boring, but after reading the first story I was intrigued by it. After I read Brian “Head” Welch’s story I just kept going. This book is a real eye opener for someone who is apart from Jesus and for one that doesn’t know Jesus. You can see stories from famous people and normal people like you and me. One of the things that I liked about this book is that after each story they give you an URL for you to see the film of the story you’d just read or to read more stories like the one you just read, they also give you a Scan Code so you can see it from your Android or Smartphone. Overall, I like this book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Reading this master piece has been a gift and has to be treasured forever. But I have found more than just the story enjoyable - the book has been a great book to read for. I am grateful to the author for created this story for family and friends to share together. Not very often do you come across a book that is equally engaging for men and women alike. Based on the back of the book; as much as I wanted to like this book, it fell a little flat for me. It was just different than I expected and only gave one chapter at the end to the story described on. I came to believe absolutely what she does to the core: that one individual can change the world, one person at a time. She makes it seem so easy. I was amazed to find such wisdom in one so young. The lessons she has learned touched my heart. Soak in her story and let it change you. Then pass it on to every young person you know. I found myself in tears over some pages, in awe at others and overall extremely blessed. I would encourage anyone even remotely interested in this topic to read it and then ask yourself how you can get involved. While it may seem strange, this book refreshed my joy in being a Christian. I was amazed at the wisdom of God who saw fit to give us an entire book of the Bible dedicated to teaching us how to love our spouses in a way that honors Him. Truly His Word is sufficient. I was amazed to find such wisdom in one so young. The lessons she has learned touched my heart. Soak in her story and let it change you. Then pass it on to every young person you know I got free copy of this from Bookaneeze for my fair review.

It's a beautiful book. The book is about your relationship with God and putting Him first in your life. He is the ultimate being and our Father. The book is "about" Him and his followers and how his influence changed their lives for the better when they turned to Him for guidance. I think this book is just a fraction of all the powerful stories about God and His amazing influence on our lives!  Listening to people from all walks of life and their personal struggles make your own seem not as bad. Reading their pain allows you to connect and get a glimpse into their lives and understand where they were in their life when they decided that living a TRULY meaningful life isn't about money or fame. It's about love and the love you have for God. Putting Him first and living through Him is the only way to really be happy.  Inspirational and a must read!

I first learned about the I Am Second movement from YouTube videos which were shared on social media sites; each story more compelling than the next. The same is true with this book. The book is a compilation of testimonials which together form the theme of the power of accepting Christ into one's life. It uses testimonials of people from all walks of life; from the famous to the infamous to those who are just your "average Joe". Each person's story shows how a relationship with Christ can take one from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Their stories remind us that it's not about who we are but of who He is, in us.

Once again, Doug Bender has released yet another amazing "I AM SECOND" book! The first book i purchased of his was the "LIVE SECOND" book, it was a "Daily Devotion" kind of book.  Where you read a page a day, and learn how to put GOD first and put YOURSELF second. But this book is all about REAL LIFE stories- From your average every day people, To celebrity's.. People who have been through it all, and have come out glorious, because of a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ.. (as have i...) Highly Recommended! ;) And what i love most of all is it features the life story of my favoritest person ever, my inspiration in life, BETHANY HAMILTON! And yes i know this book was previously released- but there is a newer version with added content! REAL stories from REAL people. REAL life changes. Good read!

This is a wonderful compilation of real people experience and their stories. It's all about what they had gone through in life. All their hardship and trauma. These are not just your everyday people. Many of them are well know. Through all their trials from falling into substances addiction to being sexually assaulted, most of them had lamented how unfair life is. But then, they realised that they must have faith in God for he is First and we are the second. They must give their lives over to God for them to be able to overcome all their setbacks. There are a lot of raw emotions involved here. I can't help feeling sad when I read some of it. The one down side which I noticed here are the stories tend to be a bit short. This would be a good read for everyone from young adults to the elderly for everyone will find some experience which he/she can relate to in this book. Hopefully, it can help those who are in need of spiritual guidance. Am giving this book four stars out of five.

It began with a simple premise. One person, a white chair, and a talk about a journey. These journeys are a bit different, however, in that it is not a journey toward power or fame, but rather the path to powerlessness. That awareness, that understanding of our own basic emptiness and consequent need for God, is at the heart of all of the stories contained in I Am Second, which is not only the name of the book edited by Doug Bender and Dave Sterrett, but also the name of a movement. In I Am Second, the reader will find true stories of people's journeys toward their own belief in God, even in the midst of struggle and pain. The one common theme is that they eventually realized their own need for Him and relinquished their control. They became “second.” Both the book and the videos online are powerful and thought provoking. Too often Christian literature becomes pain-less, avoiding the nastier parts of life in an attempt to focus on the good. While that is understandable, it can be difficult to relate to literature such as this. I Am Second unflinchingly looks at issues such as addiction and racism, war and illness. For those who find focusing on longer works difficult, the stories contained in this book are short and even include an enhanced barcode to take the reader to the online video. In this way, the book combines the best of traditional and online media, allowing people of all capabilities the chance to realize that there is hope. There is a way to live through whatever pain is found in this world, if we only become “second.”

This is one of those books you can spend years reading over and over again. Each story tells the miraculous growth of personal lives through their discovery and trust in Jesus. Each story leaves you inspired, amazed and thankful for such an amazing God that we serve. This is a must read for everyone and would make a great gift for new Christians as well as those that have “lost their way” over the years.
