Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Anger—What is it? How does it start? Does everyone, young and old, have it? Can it be controlled? If yes, how? In a true-to-life scenario, the author writes about anger in an authentic, believable voice, even though many of the sentences overstate a truth, or wordily preach the message from an adult to a kid. Even so, the wide range of emotions mentioned does allows a large framework out of which the artist worked seventeen full-page illustrations and nine half-page ones, all completed in bold, primary colors. Additionally, the multicultural characters, sometimes spot illustrations, depict well the many faces of Penny—an elementary-age student who has an anger problem. Beginning with a near fall on a discarded apple on the school grounds, the reader sees how Penny's initial attitude about wrongdoers is the match that lights the fire that lights the dynamite that blows up the building, which is Penny herself. Penny learns through Aunt Rose, also a counselor, how to recognize the cause and douse anger's first flicker. With the aid of an anger chart and applying the tips from Aunt Rose, Penny takes control of her emotions and overcomes anger before it overcomes her. 2000, New Horizons Press, $12.95. Ages 6 to 10. From The Critics
This is a picture book about a young girl who is angry and upset after a difficult day. Her aunt helps her deal appropriately with her anger. The story uses situations that most children can relate to, including using assertive responses, keeping perspective, adopting pro-active responses to solving problems, and utilizing encouraging self-talk. I think elementary age students will enjoy the book and relate to the information. I would recommend it for both home and school use. 2000, New Horizon Press, $12.95. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: S.
