I Am Somebody!: A Biography of Jesse Jackson

I Am Somebody!: A Biography of Jesse Jackson

by James S. Haskins

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-10-- An incisive biography that relates its subject's strengths and flaws in a balanced manner. Haskins's title is taken from one of Jackson's speeches in which he emphasized the importance of self-worth despite one's social or economic circumstances. The author uses this concept to describe Jackson's underprivileged childhood and adolescence, and illustrates how, through hard work and determination, he was able to excel in sports and academics and to win a college scholarship. Haskins objectively examines Jackson's rise to international prominence and his impact as a civil rights spokesperson, politician, humanitarian, and social crusader. Unfortunately, many of the black-and-white photographs are poorly reproduced and add little to the text. The bibliography cites numerous magazine articles. This title fulfills the need for current and unbiased information about Jackson. --Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, TX
