Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
As a kid I read Superman comic books over and over. They were great fun, and now this Superhero has been recast and is appearing in early readers. The opening pages recap the major characters so that the story will make sense. Readers learn that newspaper reporter Clark Kent is really Superman. His friends include Lois Lane, another reporter, and his major nemesis is Lex Luthor. In this story, Lois Lane is writing about Superman. He takes her to his secret home in the Arctic. She learns about his parents and the planet Krypton where he was born. When his father learned that the planet was going to explode, he sent his son in a rocket to another planet—Earth. Superman is invincible except against Kryptonite which is a piece of his home planet that he keeps under lock and key. In the meantime, evil Lex Luther is trying to take control of Metropolis. Superman and Lois return to the city, where Superman foils Lex's attempts. Lois gets her big story for the paper, and Clark enjoys it all because Lois does not suspect that he is really Superman. The illustrations have a computer generated look. For parents there is a note at the front of the book with suggestions for using this Level 2 book in the "I Can Read!" series.
