All Music Guide - Andrew Leahey
Fans held their breath when Rick Rubin took the Avett Brothers under his wing. What would the co-head of Columbia Records -- a man known for recording rap-rock albums and resurrecting Johnny Cash's late career -- do with a small-time folk trio? The answer is "relatively nothing," as the band's major-label debut continues charting the same musical course as Emotionalism and Mignonette. The Avett Brothers have expanded their reach since 2000, adding elements of pop and hillbilly country-rock to a bluegrass foundation, and they carry on that tradition with I and Love and You, whose songs introduce a new emphasis on piano and nuanced arrangements. Fans held their breath when Rick Rubin took the Avett Brothers under his wing. Working with a major label's budget allows the group to add small flourishes -- a cello line here, a keyboard crescendo there -- but the resulting music is hardly grand, focusing on textures rather than volume. Scott and Seth Avett share vocals throughout the album, delivering their lyrics in a speak-sing cadence that, at its best, sounds both tuneful and conversational. Given the opportunities presented here -- the ability to add strings, organs, and harmonium to the mix -- the two devote more time to slower songs, which display those sonic details better. The result is an intimate, poignant album, laced with rich production that often takes as much spotlight as the songwriting itself.
Spin Magazine - David Menconi
1/2 I and Love and You proves how miscast the Brothers were as folkies, because their ambitions are so much larger. They have always evoked the Band’s Music From Big Pink, but this album’s epic sweep and dramatic lyrical imagery...enlarges that influence to the scale of arena-rock sing-alongs.

    I Also Recommend:

    Addictive Joyful Cool

The Avetts are unlike any other band. I got hooked when I first listened to a somewhat more obscure CD called "Country Was," which is probably available on the Avett's own website - just google them. They defy categorization and convention. The first time you hear them they catch your attention even as you're thinking, "what is this?" You are compelled to listen to them again and again and you soon find that you have internalized their music and can't get enough. It is brave, infectious and quirky cool - no shame, no fear, no contrivance, just all out there waiting for you to discover and be drawn in by it.

All this holds true for the Avett's "I and Love and You." While Avett fans may be surprised by this CD - it is less edgy and more produced, restrained and polished than their previous releases, the heart of the music still shines through, just as brightly as ever. I am crazy for the raw boot stompin' unfiltered Avetts and hope to hear more of them in the future as well, but this CD is deeply and equally satisfying in its own unique way and makes me happy.

As a final note, if you can see this band live, go do it. They are the most riveting live band I have ever seen. Insanely talented, joyful and unselfconscious, completely connected with their audience, and still humble and gracious.

    Coolest music!

I'd never heard of the Avett Brothers until I happened across them at the Austin City Limits Music festival. They were amazing performers and as soon as I got home I had to get their CD. The music is hard to classify - a mix of country, folk, bluegrass with a twing of rock. Don't expect to hear this on commerical radio but you can catch it on the satelite stations! Take a chance and get this CD - you won't regret it if you are an adventurous music lover!

    more from this reviewer

    Uneven and disappointing

I generally buy entire albums instead of individual songs when I like an artist's work, and I generally expect them to have a cohesive feel or theme. Unfortunately I wish I had purchased a few songs from "I and Love and You" instead of the album. The sound goes from acoustic folk to screeching over rock guitar, sometimes in the same song. I found myself with my finger poised on the fast-forward button way too often.

Too bad, because some of the songs (and pieces of others) are quite beautiful.
