Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Borges
This charming tale will delight beginning readers because of its humor, appealing cartoon-like illustrations, and accessible text. Gerald, the elephant, and Piggie are best friends. Piggie is very concerned when he sees Gerald because Gerald has broken his trunk. Gerald has a long explanation for Piggie when he asks how it happened, and young readers will be in suspense on each page as the tale tells gets longer and longer. The large bold face print is repetitive and simple. The dialogue between the two animal friends is written in big speech bubbles which are color coordinated to match the color of each animal: gray for Gerald and pink for Piggie. Young readers will be hooked on the first page of this suspenseful story and as the story unfolds, they will be laughing out loud. After sharing this delightful story with an adult reading partner, children will soon be able to read it by themselves and they will want to read more "Elephant and Piggie" books. This is a wonderful book for beginning readers.....humorous, accessible, and thought-provoking....making it a classic in the beginning-to-read genre. Reviewer: Susan Borges
School Library Journal
PreS-K—Gerald the Elephant recounts to Piggie the crazy story of how he broke his trunk. When he was playing with Hippo, he had the idea to lift him with his trunk. As Gerald tells Piggie, "a hippo on your trunk is heavy." But there is more to it. Rhino shows up and he wants a turn, so Gerald lifts them both onto his trunk, and so on, until he has lifted Hippo, Rhino, and Hippo's big sister and her piano on his trunk. As readers expect, there is more to the story of Gerald's bandaged trunk than first imagined. Willems's now classic and predictable formula, complete with an uncluttered background, large-type word balloons, and expressive characters, is as effective as ever. The style may now be familiar, but the "Elephant & Piggie" stories remain fresh, amusing, and relevant to readers, who will sit on the edge of their seats as they eagerly anticipate the surprising turn of events. A winning addition to the series.—Kristine M. Casper, Huntington Public Library, NY

    more from this reviewer

    Huzzah for Elephant & Piggie!

    * It's always a cause for celebration when a new Elephant & Piggie is released! * The way Willems' deft illustrations convey exactly what the character is feeling, without the need for words, is really nothing short of genius. * In a few short pages, with spare prose, Willems has created a suspenseful story that will have you and your young reader hooked from start to finish. * Your young reader should be able to read it by themselves after only a few shared readings. * For all those pigeon fans out there, check out the end-papers (the inside, back cover of the books). Pigeon makes a guest appearance! ====================================================== In I Broke My Trunk, Piggie and Gerald take on their usual (hilarious) roles. Piggie, in all her exuberance, would like to know how Gerald hurt his trunk. Gerald, in his usual dramatic fashion, tells the story of how it happened. It involves hippos, rhinos and a large piano. It's a CRAZY story! And one that will have you and your young reader rolling around laughing. Mr. Willems just doesn't disappoint! It boggles the mind, just how many books can this genius produce? Next Elephant and Piggie to be released June 2011. Not soon enough.
