Children's Literature
A boy and his mom go bowling: "Cool shoes!/I slip and slide./This wood floor/helps me glide." He has trouble knocking down the pins and the ball seems to weigh six pounds. He can't hit a thing until the bumpers are put up, and then he manages to hit pins and even bowl a strike. A few words of specialized vocabulary, such as pin and bumper, are easily understood in context. Anyone who has bowled before can appreciate along with the boy how neat the slippery shoes are, the heft of the ball, and the disappointing and unsatisfying "Ker-PLUNK" when the ball hits the gutter. Caputo's cartoon character is seen from an interesting variety of perspectives and the lively pictures are well suited to the rhyming text. This book's a strike! Part of "A Rookie Reader" series, Level C, for fluent readers. 2002, Children's Press,
