Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Growing up often means that we can accomplish more things like reading and writing. More advanced activities include math and using a computer. As hand and eye coordination improves, playing sports like baseball and activities like swimming offer a chance to exercise and have fun. Just as much fun may be singing alone or with a group or playing a musical instrument. Also, as children grow older they may be required to take on greater responsibility such as caring for younger siblings or a family pet. There are several words in the text that are bolded, and there is no other key or explanation. It would be up to the adult working with the reader to follow up with the definitions. Unlike many readers of this type, the vocabulary words are listed on the opening page and the closing page includes several notes to adults about the content and focus of the book and a suggested activity, which is in addition to the related activities presented on prior pages. Simple declarative sentences on crisp white pages accompanied by photographs of children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds make this an attractive book. It is a level "C" book in the "My World" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
