Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
An invitation, a compliment, a gift, and a kindness are all reasons to say "thank you" in this pre-school primer on manners. The author illustrator uses the friendship of a young girl, a porcupine, a rabbit, and a cat to demonstrate how to respond to simple kindnesses. The delightful watercolor drawings use space and expression well. Readers will want to join in the fun of the smiling companions and mimic their manners. Outside among whimsical flowers the friends jump rope, play ball, somersault, pick flowers, fly a kite, guess the shape of clouds, and walk in puddles. The cheerful group ends the day warming their toes inside by the fire. The simple pictures are ideal for three year olds, and the clear, open text would be appropriate for the earliest readers. This book demonstrates that saying thank you can be as simple and yet as profound as flying a kite. Children, parents, and teachers will want to read the complement book, "I Can Say Please" by the same author illustrator. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
School Library Journal
PreS-K—These books feature the same little girl playing with a kitten and a bunny. In Please, each spread shows a statement or question always answered with "Yes, please." "Let's go on a picnic!' Yes, please!'" "Do you need any help?' 'Yes, please!'" Thank You follows the same format. "What clever cartwheels!' "Thank you!'" and "'Borrow our umbrella!' "Thank you!'" While the messages are obvious from the titles and the repetition of the key phrase, the simple story lines keep the books from being too didactic. Overall, the sweet texts and simple illustrations, bordering on the saccharine, will likely appeal to some girls.—Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Ft. Thomas, KY
