Children's Literature
Before getting into the story there is a note to educators and parents. It explains that the purpose of the "I Can Do It" series is to help young children accomplish simple tasks. Also, the books are designed to engage readers through familiar topics and realistic photographs that support the text. Initially they are designed for guided reading and when a child develops fluency, they can be read independently. Telephones are so ubiquitous that we probably take the ability to use one for granted. Simple instructions demonstrate how to make a call and phone etiquette such as saying hello and goodbye. I do think that by the time most kids will be able to read this book they will have experienced using the phone and observed parents and caregivers sufficiently long enough to know what to do. A three-word glossary, decent bibliography, web site reference, index and blurb about the author round out the book. 2005, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 5 to 7.
