Editorial Reviews

Denise Perry Donavin
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the term for the physical, mental, and emotional reaction of an individual to a severe trauma, such as abuse, victimization, auto accident, or war. The reaction, which can be immediate or triggered much later in life, may take such forms as anxiety, clinical depression, and addiction. Metsakis spells out step-by-step recovery methods: recognition of the trauma, expression of anger and grief, and empowerment attained once the trauma has been discovered, thought out, and resolved. Especially useful is the thorough coverage of specific traumas, which can help individuals avoid revictimization and cope with guilt and other likely emotions. This valuable book is enhanced by an extensive appendix that includes professional directories, self-help organizations, and other resources for specific addictions.
