فيكتور كرافتشنكو هو أحد أبرز المنشقين عن الاتحاد السوفييتي في الأربعينيات، وُلد في 11 أكتوبر 1905 لعائلة أوكرانية. درس هندسة التعدين حيث تعرف على الزعيم السوفييتي ليونيد بريجنيف. انضم إلى الحزب الشيوعي في عام 1929، لكن خاب أمله من الانتهاكات الإنسانية التي شهدها في أوكرانيا. في عام 1944، ترك منصبه كرئيس للّجنة المشتريات السوفييتية في واشنطن وطلب اللجوء السياسي في الولايات المتحدة، مما أدى إلى اتهامه بالخيانة من قبل الاتحاد السوفييتي. كتب كرافتشنكو مذكراته الشخصية عام 1946 تحت عنوان "آثرت الحرية"، حيث شارك تجاربه وشهادته عن الحياة في الاتحاد السوفييتي. توفي في 25 فبراير 1966، ولا تزال الظروف المحيطة بوفاته محاطة بالغموض، مما يثير تساؤلات حول ما إذا كان انتحارًا أم اغتيالًا.
