Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Caitlyn Payne
As the new "anchor," or final runner, on the boys' relay team at the Victory school, Danny is sure he will lead his teammates to an easy and impressive victory in their upcoming race. It does not matter how many times his coach reminds him a relay is a team effort—Danny is sure his super-speed will win his team the victory. And on the race day, Danny is ready and prepared—until he gets a stunning surprise as he crosses the finish line, causing him to re-evaluate the importance and meaning of the word "team," even after the race is over. I Could Be a One-Man Relay is a good teaching tool for young readers, reminding them about team work and including intriguing facts about famous track athletes through history in an afterward. But the actually story is difficult to engage in, due to Danny's arrogance and lack of support for his teammates. And even after the race, Danny does not seem to learn he is only one member of a team. As a former track athlete and consistently the slowest member of my relay teams, I always knew the value of my teammates and how important it was to work together. And that is something that Danny, despite the best intentions of the author, does not learn.
