Overview

Kids come up with all kinds of excuses for not doing their chores. But once-boring jobs will become a treat once children and parents read this book of bouncy poems. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
The child in the opening poem describes the dilemma of many children. Cleaning is boring and, besides, she thinks her room looks fine. The following poems describe such tasks as making the bed, sorting for recycling, setting the table, washing dishes, dusting, scrubbing the kitchen floor, shoveling snow, and helping in the garden. Apparently doing laundry is a major chore, as three poems are devoted to this activity, all depicting the same toddler in the midst of the clothing. Other illustrations show children from a variety of ethnic groups. The colorful pictures contribute to the action and aid in the understanding of the text. Most poems have a strong sense of rhythm, but reading all sixteen of them aloud in one sitting may result in a singsong type of cadence. Parents will enjoy sharing these poems with their youngsters and may actually get some cooperation with household tasks as a result.
School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2
These 16 selections read aloud well and use different rhyme schemes. Bright cartoon pictures show mainly smiling children of various ethnicities helping to plant a garden, do laundry, wash dishes, etc. In the first poem, "Bores," a child exclaims to her mother: "I don't want to clean my room!/It looks fine to me./I like my toys out on the floor-/they're easier to see." The last one, "All Done," shows the same pair shaking hands and concludes, "The tub is scrubbed,/the windows washed./The house smells sweet and new./And everything looks twice as nice/Because I cleaned with you ." A satisfying book for the younger crowd.

Kirkus Reviews
The 16 rhyming poems in this collection are aimed at preschoolers who are just learning about household chores such as folding laundry, vacuuming and making beds. Some of the poems are humorous and amiable, with action provided by a toddler leaping through the laundry or a child bouncing on a bed with starry sheets. Other poems try too earnestly to make a particular chore interesting or fun, not always successfully, and several poems in the collection either don't scan well or have a sing-songy rhythm. Koeller's cheerful illustrations add to the volume's appeal, with a multiethnic cast of children and parents working together both inside the home and outdoors. She shows an equal division of tasks between males and females, with boys setting the table and cleaning up and a dad folding laundry and taking care of a toddler. Preschool teachers may find this collection useful for reinforcing basic housekeeping skills in the classroom, and parents might like to try the poems with their preschoolers as a way of focusing on the message of families working cooperatively. (Poetry. 3-5)
