Children's Literature - Rebecca Joseph
Fourteen-year-old Jere has been haunted for years by a terrifying dream of a murder. One day he and his friend Avery visit the zoo and Jere sees the murderer from his dreams working at the zoo. The two teenagers begin to explore the possibility that Jere really witnessed a murder when he was a young child and must stop the murderer from striking again. This is an easy to read and enjoyable novel.

Gr 5-8The bizarre-looking guy who works in the bird house at the zoo keeps appearing in Jere Robison's recurring nightmare, and the boy is troubled as to why everything in that strange dream is so mysteriously vivid and real. It all becomes clear when his parents reluctantly relate the events of a murder that took place across the street from their house 10 years earlier, and Jere realizes that he witnessed it when he was four years old. After the police are contacted and start an investigation, the zoo employee seemingly disappears. With help from his friend Avery, he tracks down the deranged man with almost deadly results. A steady and deliberate build up to the suspenseful climax brings depth to this novel. The main characters are convincingly drawn as are the various circumstances in which they find themselves. Dexter's unclouded delivery ties up all the events into a gratifying completion. An engrossing, suspense-filled mystery.Jana R. Fine, Clearwater Public Library System, FL
Kirkus Reviews
A deranged killer stalks two teenagers in this unvarnished thriller from Dexter (Alien Game, 1995, etc.). Out with his flaky friend, Avery, Jere gets a glimpse of a strange zoo employee, but it's enough to unlock a flood of fragmentary dreams and long-buried memories of an unsolved murder he witnessed ten years before. The tension mounts when the employee, Al Watkins, disappears; Jere finds evidence that the man is visiting the zoo at night, and Avery begins hearing odd noises in her building. Jere comes over to keep her company, and Watkins confronts them in the laundry room at gunpoint. Dexter's efforts to flesh out the action with subplots are only minor distractions. Shabby, threatening, always mumbling to himself, Watkins makes a thoroughly terrifying villain who will rivet readers—as will the shootout that ends the climactic standoff. Fans of Joan Lowery Nixon's suspense novels will relish this pulse-pounder.
