Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Misérables, and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers who appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late '60s and early '70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very...

New York Times - Stephen Holden
In the most striking cut Ms. Boyle turns the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” into a starkly beautiful declaration of tenacity and resolution. Her “Cry Me a River,” the least vengeful version I’ve heard, makes this gloating crow of emotional payback a reflection on cosmic balance.
Baltimore Sun - Sam Sessa
The song selection ("Daydream Believer," "Who I Was Born to Be," "Proud") suits Boyle's meteoric rise. And the sparse, simple production suits Boyle's classic-sounding voice.... The title track, which was the first number she sang on "Britain's Got Talent," still sends shivers down my spine.... I've never heard anyone do it better.

I Dreamed a Dream — and Susan Boyle — is a definite keeper. The singer has already made an emotional connection with her audience that is invaluable to the effect of her album. Reflective and poignant, I Dreamed a Dream will please a wide range of listeners with Boyle’s undeniably beautiful voice accompanied by a message that her voice breathes life into.

    Emotions overflow.

Susan has a voice to wring emotions from the most hardened heart. Her version of "Cry Me A River" is outstanding. I've never heard better in my 74 years on this earth.

    Wow!

Considering her limited professional training and performance experience, I continue to be amazed at Ms. Boyle's abilities. My favorite track on this album is "Cry Me a River".

    Exquisite voice!

I heard her sing Cry Me A River on a Cd many years ago from England which had several unknown artists on it...I was always amazed that it didn't become popular here. When I heard her on British Idol, I just knew it was the same person. I am very happy the CD is coming out 11/24..I truly believe it will be a great success.

Susan Boyle brings it all together. She has wowed the world and many of us see her as a dear friend that we all want to succeed. She's not just likeable but she's loveable. My heart and my prayers are with her.

She is at her top performance. Just listening to her is an experience unto itself. The selection of songs is a wide range from I dreamed a dream to silent night, but it is all so wonderful. My heart swell with pride for her.

"Dreamed a Dream" Not Worth It

I guess I'm just spoiled by Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion because Ms. Boyle just didn't thrill me at all. No inflection or emotion in her voice; simply flat and monotone throughout. Beautiful voice she has--I'll give her that, but a beautiful singing voice can only carry you so far, especially when it cracks at certain points within each song and when it doesn't convey any drama or personality. I'm sorry, Ms. Boyle. I really wanted to like your CD; but in hearing it, I can see why you didn't win the competition. This CD is just not worth buying. In fact, I'm returning it. Very disappointed with it.

    Better than expected

Amazing voice, great choice of songs! Like most other people, I bought this based on her rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" - I hadn't heard her sing anything else, but at $9.99 what's to lose? Well, she did not let me down. Susan's version of "Who I Was Born to Be" is so uplifting, so powerful that it's become my favorite song. When's her next CD coming out??

Susan Boyle has the voice of an Angel!

For the millions who have watched her you tube audition, this album is a gift. Susan's range in amazing, her selections interesting, and her voice a treasure. Can't wait for the next album!

you never know what will come out!

when I saw this woman walk out on stage that night the panel of judges was prepared to make fun of her....roll their eyes and snicker.
Then she opened her mouth and sang like an angel.
I enjoyed all the tracks, and it just seems so utterly cool that this woman has finally made it.
I went back to listen to the Stones do Wild Horses and realized why I didn't remember that song!!! Her version is certainly a love song.

    easy listening

I agree with the above reviewers with regard to song choice, presentation, etc., and it is easy, pleasant listening. My disappointment is with the fact that the instrumentation is so loud and sometimes covers up her singing. Is it my CD or is the music so loud on all? I would like it to be in the background more so that I could hear her singing as the main feature.

    A Godsend! Real music!

I've lost hope for beautiful music - sickened by the flow of repetitious, misogynist, obscene, violent cacophony of noise being called 'music' - and long ago gave up purchasing CDs.
And suddenly there is Susan and I have played it over and over ever since receiving it - reveling in the range of beautiful sound this wonderful woman produces!! How soon can we get the next one? .... and the next....

    Loved it!

I just received Susan Boyle's debut album and I am listening to it for the third time through. Ms. Boyle has a very good voice, a pleasure to listen to. She hits her notes perfectly with warmth and emotion, tells the story instead of just singing a song. I especially like her rendition of Wild Horses. Never used to like that song, but she's made it her own, slowed it down and added a touch of jazz. The arrangement is just lovely. Her voice is strong and whether she whispers or belts it, she's in control. Others have said the music choices are too ecclectic, but I think they are just right -- maybe a holiday song should not have been tacked on but so what? It coincides with the release date. My belief is that she chose exactly what she likes to sing, so this collection perfectly reflects her talents and personality. Can't wait for her next album.

    I Also Recommend:

    Easy listening.

The songs on this CD are like listening to a lounge singer. Very soothing and contemplative. I've played this CD on my computer over and over. I purchased 3 copies and will give two as presents.

    susan boyle debut album

My Lord in Heaven. Where has she been all these years. A grand lady and her voice gives me goose bumps. Simon Cowal certainly got lucky with her too. I wish Susan nothing but the best for the remainder of her life. She has one of the most magnificient voices I have ever heard.

Very good start for Susan Boyle!!!

I was very impressive by the time I first listen to Susan on TV and now she really made it once again. Excellent choices with a outstanding performance. She is ready for America. Now it is show time....we are waiting for you, Susan!!!

    more from this reviewer

Susan Boyle is more than just an underdog.

Susan Boyle's debut has been flying off the shelves and it's really little wonder. This CD makes an excellent gift for people of all ages (it's a gift even if you buy it for yourself) because it truly is inspiring. Yes there is the obvious lesson: Don't judge a book by it's cover. Many who watched her performance (especially in the early days of all the buzz), no matter how open minded, had some sliver of doubt as to how it would turn out. 'She's going to sing? Really?' The William Hung's of the world didn't help much, but when she started to sing - well, you can watch the video.

The other, less discussed but still important, lesson: Never give up on your dreams. You don't have to constantly go after them, but don't give up. There are several singers and actors who are getting to do what they want later in life (Sharon Jones is a great songstress who got rejected several times before Daptone Records, for example).

That being said, Susan Boyle isn't the greatest vocalist of all time, not even this time. This does not take away from how good she is, and she is good. The song choice, the album cover (I love the 'Oh gosh' pose - so cute!), and the slight makeover are all very obvious marketing ploys but they don't take away from the joy of listening to her sing in that pure voice of hers and the production is very simple - which is a fitting canvas for Ms. Boyle. I must say that 'Cry Me A River' is my one source of disappointment. I love this song and while she sings it well it is better served with some small amount of disdain or anger - emotion of some sort. Sure, it works as 'a reflection on cosmic balance' but this song is best suited for someone willing to be a bit feisty. The spark of sass we saw went we first met her is absent entirely from this album. It would have been nice if she could have been a bit uptempo somewhere (though her down tempo 'Daydream Believer' is better than I would have expected) and shown some personality.

Overall I am enamored of Ms. Boyle's debut and recommend it to EVERYONE. It's a timeless CD I imagine playing for future generations.

Her Voice and presentation of songs was unbelieveable, she took Cry me a River and made it a soulful song.

I would rate this CD as one of the best that I have heard in long time, she has the ability to draw you into her songs when she sings. I think that people who helped bring this CD to the public should be applauded also for bringing so much talent to the public
