Overview

Climb aboard a helicopter with National Geographic photographer Robert Haas and journey all over the world in search of wild animals and exotic places. Cruise over the savanna grasslands of Africa and watch from above as lions hunt buffalos, one of the few "fair fights" in the African wilderness. Enjoy the spectacle as brilliant pink flamingos run faster and faster along the surface of the water before taking off and landing to form the perfect shape of a huge flamingo. Track muddy footprints across a rain-drenched salt pan to find a lone wildebeest that joins a herd of zebras. Even catch a glimpse of a large group of sharks that glide silently through shallow water in search of their next meal.
I Dreamed of Flying Like a Bird takes readers across the globe, from the marshlands of Botswana to the frigid waters of Greenland to the jungles of Brazil. Haas’s stunning color photographs bring to life the awesome beauty and pulsating action of nature’s wildest creatures and the thrill of capturing the perfect image from the air. The author’s dream of flying like a bird provides the perfect vantage point for witnessing unusual drama and adventures from a bird’s eye view. This book is a gorgeous, thrilling experience for adventurers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kirsten Shaw
Photographer Haas recounts his journeys throughout the world trying to capture photographs of wild animals while dangling over the side of a helicopter. The book is full of spectacular photos taken by Haas while he describes just what it takes to capture that perfect moment. From catching lions hunting for African buffalo, flamingoes taking off in flight, crocodiles hunting along the riverbanks, and brown bears fishing for salmon, Haas shares the unique perspective he has from above. Children will enjoy looking at the photographs and have fun searching for animals in the pictures such as pointing out caimans hiding in a swamp while an unsuspecting stork stops for a drink, and finding nurse sharks among the churning waters. Haas even manages to catch a humpback whale belly up while playing in the ocean. A great addition for any library or classroom, this book will be a delight for any child interested in animals. All author proceeds are donated to The Humane Society of the United States. Reviewer: Kirsten Shaw

Gr 6 Up—Haas describes the challenges and successes he has experienced in his work and shows off some of his most famous photos, including one of flamingos standing in a formation that resembles a huge pink bird. Most pictures appear full bleed opposite the text. Plenty of white space, broad margins, and widely spaced lines contribute to the book's clean look. For each of the eight creatures featured there is a caption detailing an aspect of the animal, such as its conservation status, diet, behavior, or habitat. This is a coffee-table type of book with visuals that wow and a simple, thrilling narrative that is easily dismissed for the photos. Shelved with books on photography, it serves as a beautiful but additional purchase.—Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library
