I Feel Like Singing Today

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
A complete triumph on every level, I Feel Like Singing Today is the high-water mark for Jim Lauderdale -- and for Ralph Stanley, the patron saint of mountain music; the album ranks with the most exemplary work of his extraordinary career. Simply put, this is a celebration not only of two men's friendship and the musicianship that binds them together, but also of beliefs deeply held by both: a celebration of faith, of devotion, of commitment, of love's rewards, and of the joy of the righteous -- and challenging -- path. Lauderdale, who's been on a roll with his albums Whisper and Onward Through It All, supplies most of the songs -- and they sound like they're about a ...

Lauderdale, who's been on a roll with his albums Whisper and Onward Through It All, supplies most of the songs -- and they sound like they're about a hundred years old, rose up whole from the North Carolina soil where Lauderdale was born. That's high praise. Stanley might have grown up singing "Another Sinner's Prayer" or the celebratory title song. Lauderdale's dark, earthy voice blends beautifully with Stanley's soul-piercing high lonesome tenor, and the two inspire intense, heightened performances as the Clinch Mountain Boys supply fiery accompaniment and incandescent background harmonies. All 15 songs here are highlights, but the moment that lingers is the a cappella hymn, "Like Him," a Lauderdale song of faith that Stanley scorches in a performance that will raise goose flesh. If it doesn't, you're dead. Music doesn't get any closer to the bone than this.
All Music Guide - Philip Van Vleck
North Carolina native Jim Lauderdale is well-known in Nashville as a proficient songwriter and an excellent performer in his own right. This album finds Lauderdale taking a shot a bluegrass music. He even wrote or co-authored nine of the 15 tunes on the CD, including two of them with former Grateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter. He also had the good sense to throw in with Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, one of the premier bluegrass/mountain music bands in the world. This is a unique project for Lauderdale. The fact that he succeeds so thoroughly is due not only to his eminent songwriting chops but also because he has obviously learned his bluegrass lessons very well over the years. Given that anyone who can sing will sound like a veteran bluegrasser if they're singing with Ralph Stanley, it's still remarkable how convincingly Lauderdale has slipped into this genre.
