Overview

From the exhilaration of take-off to the joy of seeing one's family at the arrival gate, here is an ideal book to prepare a child for his or her first airline flight—solo or en famille. Anne Rockwell, beloved author of many popular children's books on transportation, takes readers on a typical flight, describing in fascinating detail the many sights, sounds, and feelings of the journey from a young traveler's point of view. Annette Cable's (Me on the Map) detailed and vibrant illustrations perfectly complement the child-friendly text while her bird's-eye views show the earth spread out like a giant patchwork quilt.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A multiracial cast of characters populates this reassuring description of a boy's airplane trip, designed to prepare children for their first flights. Ages 5-8. (June)
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2A child's account of his plane trip to visit his cousins. Through his narrative, readers are given a detailed account of what to expect, from the sound of the seat belt sign to the jet engines growing quiet as the plane lands. Rockwell includes practical tips such as yawning to keep one's ears from popping. The illustrations are clear and filled with color, but the characters are stiff and resemble old-fashioned cartoons. Because of the sound advice, however, this is a useful book for children embarking on a flight, either alone, like this young narrator, or with adults. It will also give a chuckle to some veteran flyers who are always glad to hear the sweet BUMP of the landing gear as it touches down.Kathy Mitchell, Gadsden Co. Public Library, Quincy, FL
