Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-This 10-chapter picture book is a realistic and reassuring portrayal of a father and daughter facing some time alone together. Tessie, the young narrator, is upset-her mother is off to Colorado for a summer workshop and her older brother is going on a backpacking trip. Managing meals and carpools, doing office work at home, and reassuring his worried daughter that Mom will indeed return are a bit of a challenge for Dad. Finding a kitten called Mouse helps Tessie and her father focus on taking care of each other and their new pet. Compared to most beginning readers, this book has more text, is set in a smaller type size, and has a more involved plot. However, Plecas's charming watercolor-and-ink illustrations on each page give visual breaks to youngsters flexing their reading muscles. A fine addition.-Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

In this beginning chapter book, Tessie is upset that her mother is going away to study for the summer. Not only that, her brother is off for a camping trip with their grandfather, and Tessie's only playmate is Willie Martin--a four-year-old baby. But as the weeks move slowly by, with too much pizza for dinner and too many worries about whether her mom will really come back, Tessie forges a stronger relationship with her father, and a new kitten gives her something on which to shower her affection. Although easy to read, this is meatier than some in the genre. The color illustrations that appear on every page sparkle with good humor and add accessibility to the story.
