Overview

Germaine and her older sister and brother were left orphans in 1931. In this memoir, Germaine recalls stories of her life on their Kansas farm during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. They did what they could to survive, which included her being sent to live with others several times during her childhood, and her family being bootleggers. Even though it was a difficult life, Germaine tells stories of a happy life, all with a sense of humor and gratitude.

About the Author

Germaine Godart Trumm was born on a farm in Kansas in 1929. Her mother died when she was two years old, leaving her and her older sister and brother orphans. They stayed together on the farm until the 1940s when they moved to Los Angeles, California. When her siblings joined the military during World War II, Germaine was left on her own when she was 14 years old. She met her husband after the war and they were married for 62 years and raised nine children in Concord, California. She enjoyed volunteering, entertaining, reading, cooking, crafting, and camping.
