I Have an Aunt on Marlborough Street

Editorial Reviews

Hazel Rochman
"It feels as if I have traveled half the world away," Phoebe says of her visits to her aunt and namesake in the historical Marlborough Street area of Boston. Her aunt's walk-up is only a short trip from the lawns and shopping malls of Phoebe's neighborhood, but it's a different universe. Those who know Boston will enjoy the details of the Public Garden, with the swan boats and statues and all the things you can do there through the seasons. But of wider appeal is the story of spending time alone with a loving relative. The poetic text and light-filled watercolor illustrations show a world that's slightly eccentric without being exotic. The two Phoebes do their nails, eat Chinese take-outs, play cards, stay up late, laugh at their private jokes. A loving bond connects them and allows the young girl to dream beyond herself.
