Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathy Puett Miller
Part of a series entitled "Pebble Character Values," this book provides young readers with easy-to-read text in a nonfiction format. In fact, the publisher indicates these books were designed to "help below-level readers access text and have exposure to the nonfiction style." Although there are no more than fourteen words to a page, the book contains many familiar features of nonfiction including headings, a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. It would have been helpful to have pronunciation keys in the glossary but, since that is not included, the introduction of key vocabulary (and a discussion of the word's meaning) could be helpful. "Read More" and "Internet Sites" segments are included after the glossary to encourage reading more about this subject. The entire series (fourteen titles in all) could easily be included in a project in which students study strong character by reading varying text suited to individual reading abilities (both fiction and nonfiction, including biographies). This series could also be used in language arts instruction, character education classes, or in a classroom library. Engaging a consultant in character education, Dr. Madonna Murphy, to review this book before publishing adds credibility to the contents.
