    Uplifting

    This is the perfect collection for those days when you're feeling out of touch with the divine or to affirm you when you are feeling just fine. The poems are beautiful, the translations accessible. This is a book worth reading and rereading.

    My breath and heart

    The essence. I know many people have been unhappy with the artistic license that Daniel Ladinsky has taken with the translations of Hafiz! Yet I do not.

    Partly, because I know so much is lost in literal translation. My husband is from Japan, and he thought Shakespeare was a joke, until he watched it with me, and I could explain to him the tongue in cheek meanings in the use of the words. It also works the other way now.

    Perhaps if these were the only translations. But they are not, there are many literal translations, and they are all different. Which shows the depth of the language that is lost.

    For me, Mr. Ladinsky paints an image the dives directly into the hearts understanding. While the minds argue and garble about which is the true meaning .... the heart simply understands and leaves the fighting of words to those who love words.

    makes every day a great day

    I read this book at the end of every day and the wisdom of it lifts me right out of whatever ugly cloud I've gotten myself into during the day. The ancient wisdom combined with Daniel Ladinsky's wit and sense of what is clever is fantastic. I'm buying copies for everyone I know.
