Overview

Violet Redmond's family and fortune might be formidable and her beauty and wit matchless—but her infamous flare for mischief keeps all but the most lionhearted suitors at bay. Only Violet knows what will assuage her restlessness: a man who doesn't bore her to tears, and a clue to the fate of her missing brother. She never dreamed she'd find both with a man whose own pedigree is far from impeccable.

"Savage" is what the women of the ton whisper about the newly styled Earl of Ardmay—albeit with shivers of pleasure. Born an English bastard, raised on the high seas, he's on a mission to capture a notorious pirate for vengeance. But while Violet's belief in her brother's innocence maddens him, her courage awes him . . . and her sensuality finally undoes him. Now the man who once lost everything and the girl who has everything to lose are bound by a passion that could either end in betrayal . . . or become everything they ever dreamed.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Violet Redmond had been humored for so long by her family, especially by her brothers, that she considers her bored yet intemperate behavior to be acceptable. Her elder brother Lyon had disappeared from their midst a year ago, something to do with that awful Olivia Eversea. Violet overhears sea captain Asher Flint, the newly minted Earl of Ardmay, discussing his search for a pirate called Le Chat and decides the miscreant is her missing sibling (Lyon = lion = big cat). She impetuously stows away on Flint's ship, and when he discovers his surprise "guest," Flint thinks the unbridled Lady Violet needs disciplining. Or does he find her determination and constancy regarding her brother's innocence more appealing than annoying?Verdict The talented Long (Like No Other Lover) adds to her Redmond/Eversea series with this lushly written story of two strong, steadfast individuals in opposition as they navigate rough waters to finding the truth yet hesitant to acknowledge its repercussions. Long's sumptuous language reveals her protagonists as flawed yet resolute and finally more than open to passion and love. Exquisite for romance fans. One caveat: the quality of the proofreading in this finished edition is well below par; Long and her readers deserve better. [Ebook ISBN 978-0-06-200018-7.]—Bette-Lee Fox, Library Journal

Meet the Author

San Francisco Bay Area native Julie Anne Long originally set out to be a rock star when she grew up (and she has the guitars and fringed clothing stuffed in the back of her closet to prove it), but writing was always her first love. She began her academic career as a Journalism major, until she realized Creative Writing was a better fit for her freewheeling imagination and overdeveloped sense of whimsy. And when playing guitar in dank, sticky clubs finally lost its "charm," Julie realized she could incorporate all the best things about being in a band—namely drama, passion, and men with unruly hair—into novels, while also indulging her love of history and research. Since then, her books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the RITA®, Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice, the Holt Medallion, Bookseller's Best, and The Quills, and reviewers have been known to use words such as "dazzling," "brilliant," and "impossible to put down" when describing them.

    An outstanding read!!!

The only thing that would make this book better is if it would keep going! You become connected to the characters and want them both to win. I enjoyed it so much I had to read it twice! It is still on the home page of my nook so I can keep going back without having to look for it.

An Adventurous, Sexy Romp Long Fans Will Love

This latest installment in Julie Anne Long's Pennyroyal Green series, I KISSED AN EARL is Violet Redmond's book. If you're familiar with the series, you'll remember Violet as a key player in LIKE NO OTHER LOVER. When she is introduced at a ball to the newly elevated sea captain, the Earl of Ardmay, and his first mate Lord Lavay, Violet is intrigued. After all, hadn't the gypsy girl said the name Lavay to her? And hadn't she foretold that Violet would go on a long journey over water? But what intrigues her more is the fact that Ardmay has been charged by the king to stop a pirate calling himself Le Chat from stealing the cargo of English sailing vessels. When she hears that Le Chat's ship is called THE OLIVIA, which just so happens to be the name of the woman who broke her brother Lyon's heart, Violet is convinced that there is a real possibility that Le Chat is her missing brother. So, she sneaks herself onto Ardmay's ship and well, you can guess how well that goes over with the Earl.

What follows is the best sort of cabin/seafaring romance written with the witty, crisp, lyrical prose that Long has become known for. I loved the way that Olivia and Ardmay fell for one another despite themselves, and the conflicts that genuinely stand in the way of their ever being able to be together. The HEA comes with compromises on both sides, but the result is sigh-inducing satisfaction. Wonderful read.

    Great Story!

I liked this story because it was different from the other historical romances I'm used to reading. The only bad thing was that I wish it had ended differently with more action, but it was a cute story and I'll probably look for this author to read her other stories.

    Don't Miss This One

Love this whole series. Each book stands alone, but come on, you are going to enjoy a series so much more if you read the in order. I hate to choose, but this is one of my favorites. Julie Anne Long writes vivid characters with wit and emotion. Much of this story takes place at sea as the hero is tracking a notorious pirate who may or may not be Violet Redmond's missing brother. She falls in love with Asher, but she loves her brother. She wants to find her brother, but she doesn't want Asher to find him. Wonderful dilemma.

Romance and Action Make this a Great Read!

The plot was refreshing and the ending was everything I was hoping it would be! The story, the plot and the characters are woven perfectly in this story.

    Not Long's Best

This doesn't have the lightness and humor I liked in many of the author's previous works but it's still pretty good. Good characters, good conflict, good premise but something was missing for me. If you haven't read this author before, go have a look at her first few novels---they are excellent!

    strong Pennyroyal Green historical entry

At a gala, Violet Redmond and Captain Asher "Savage" Flint a new Earl meet; with him is his first mate Lord Lavay. The Crown has assigned the sea captain to end the reign of notorious pirate Le Chat whose vessel is called Olivia, the name of the woman who broke her brother's heart. Asher believes Violet's missing brother Lyon is Le Chat.

Recognizing what a gypsy foretold her and what she overheard between the earl and his first mate, Violet sneaks onto Flint's vessel as he heads to Cadiz. Flint finds his stowaway and is charmed by her sibling allegiance, but even as they fall in love he plans to insure that the pirate has no more cat lives.

The latest Pennyroyal Green historical (see Like No Other Lover) is a strong entry as love is tested and seems doomed to failure if Lyon proves to be le Chat as both lead characters believe. Fast-paced, this high seas romance is an entertaining tale as her brother whether he is the pirate or not stands between the Earl and the Lady as they are conflicted over her sibling.
