Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With an animal cast so elated that they seem on the verge of jumping into readers' laps, Murphy (How Kind!) offer indisputable proof that a newborn is one of nature's most powerful mood enhancers. A fish leaps for joy: "I saw the baby! Did you see the baby?" "Yes!" a wide-eyed heron-like bird exclaims. "I saw the baby, the teeny weeny thing." More pairs gleefully compare notes in rhythmic prose about feeding, tickling or serenading the baby, and Murphy's bold, silhouetted characterizations-popping like flashbulbs out of alternating backgrounds of black and white-make it clear that everyone has come away energized from their infant interaction. A band of a single solid color (chartreuse, fuchsia, sienna) on the top, bottom or side of each spread injects additional pizzazz. The happiest animal of all: the baby's mother, a duck. "Of course I kissed the baby, my own amazing baby," she tells a hopping mouse. The feathered mother then turns to her adoring yellow offspring (the first color introduced into the main composition) to kiss her duckling once more with a huge "Ppfffwah!" (an onomatopoeia made even more memorable thanks to Murphy's own coltish typography). The high-contrast pictures and exclamatory text are guaranteed eye and ear magnets for littlest ones. Even skeptical new siblings will get a kick out of the animals' unbridled enthusiasm. Ages 2-5. (May) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
Wow! Are the animals ever excited about the arrival of the baby! Fish, squirrel, ant, bird, and frog query each other as to how they have welcomed the baby. Fish starts us off with "I saw the baby! Did you see the baby?" To which comes the answer from bird, "Yes! I saw the baby, the teeny weeny thing!" Others feed, sing, tickle and kiss. The reader learns whose baby it is when Mouse asks Duck if she has kissed the baby. Duck proudly answers, "Of course I kissed the baby, my own amazing baby." The next spread shows her giving Baby another loud smackeroo. Murphy effectively plays neon yellows, pinks, and greens against black and white. The animals, all silhouettes, are either white against black or black against white, until we first see the bright yellow baby duck, then turn the page to see him kissed, with "Ppfffwah" in hot pink, and turn the page again to see rose-colored quack, quack, quacks. The earlier pages are edged with strips of various colors that give them pizzazz. In many ways, the book is so simple; yet the sum of the parts makes a marvelous whole. Its visual and auditory appeal, its bounce, and its repetitious call-and-refrain make this lots of fun. That it might ease the way for siblings of a new baby is an added plus. 2003, Candlewick Press,

    more from this reviewer

    Funnest read aloud book!!!!!!!

I read about this book in the Chinaberry catalog and it is absolutely wonderful. We have lost it once and I quickly went out and bought it again. So fun to read and judging by my daughter, an absolute blast to listen to as well!

Deserves to be up there in your top 5-10 board books.

In fact, my one year old "read to me" early with the last page, "Quack Quack, Baby" she surprised me with one night. It was precious! A keeper!

Buy it for yourself, buy it for a gift, recommend it to your friends. WONDERFUL BOOK.

    'I Kissed the Baby'

Black and white illustrations attract the attention of my four month old grandson. He enjoys the interaction with his grandmother as we read each page, for example, kiss the baby, sing to the baby and tickle the baby. This is a great sit on the lap and snuggle book!
