Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This title is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series, which introduces young readers to medical conditions commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, about obesity, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the condition and what causes it, why obesity issues have become more of a concern in the last thirty years, and how people with the condition are impacted by it. The book then moves into sections on healthy eating and being fit, followed by a consideration of how people can support friends trying to live a healthier life; this is followed by a two page segment on Jennifer Hudson, a singer who decided, for health reasons, to lose a significant amount of weight and First Lady Michelle Obama, who is leading a crusade to get American kids to eat healthier and to exercise more. A final section, "Obesity: Facts and Fiction," has a quiz that careful readers should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with obesity and show a mix of positive pictures of young people supporting friends who are obese as well as the occasional more negative picture that illustrates the limitations that come with obesity. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like to learn more about obesity and how to combat it. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and is successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
