Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This title is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series, which introduces young readers to medical conditions commonly faced in our world today. This particular text about wheelchair use and those who require help with mobility, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the reasons people need to use wheelchairs and how they live and work using them. The book then moves into sections on different types of wheelchairs and the advantages of each and how people who utilize wheelchairs stay active and fit. This is followed by a section of wheelchair sports and then a two page segment about Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist who has been confined to a wheelchair much of his life but has still made amazing scientific discoveries; and Aaron Fotheringham, whose spina bifida has not kept him from an active lifestyle doing stunts using his wheelchair at skate parks. A final section, "Using a Wheel Chair: Facts and Fiction," has a quiz that careful readers should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life using a wheelchair and show a mix of positive pictures of young people supporting friends who are chairbound. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and is successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
