Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This text is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series specifically focused on introducing young readers to health issues commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, with its focus on hearing impairments, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the impairment and what it is, treatments for certain types of impairments, how impairments can occur and various treatments, and how one lives with an extreme impairment like deafness. The book then moves into a consideration of how people can respond to impairments with lip reading and sign language in school, public, and home situations; this sequence of information also has a nice section about two famous people who have impairments—in this case, musician Evelyn Glennie and basketball player Lance Allred—and how each has trained to be successful in his/her field. A final section on being a good friend to someone with a hearing impairment as well as a "Facts and Fiction" section comes at the end of the text, and it has a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with hearing impairments and are positive pictures of young people interacting with others who have impairments. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more information about hearing impairments. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and is successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
