Children's Literature - Jean BoreenThis text is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series specifically focused on introducing young readers to health issues commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, with its focus on allergies, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the medical condition and what it is, what people are generally allergic to, and who has allergies. The book then moves into a consideration of how people who have allergies "live" with them; this sequence of information also has a nice section discussing how to help someone who has particular types of allergies. The final narrative section focuses on famous people who have particular allergiesin this case, tennis players Lleyton Hewittgrass allergyand Serena Williamspeanut allergyand how each has been successful despite the allergy. A "Fact and Fiction" section comes at the end of each text, and is actually a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with allergies and are generally positive pictures of young people interacting with others in nurturing ways. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more about allergies. This book and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers and both succeed. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
