Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This text is part of a series specifically focused on introducing young readers to health issues commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, with its focus on asthma, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the disease and what it is, how it is triggered, and who gets asthma. The book then moves into a consideration of how people live with the disease and the medications and treatments for those who suffer from asthma; this sequence of information has a nice section addressing how to be a friend to someone who is dealing with asthma. The final narrative section focuses on two famous people who have the disease—in this case, soccer star David Beckham and Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington—and how each has trained so as to be successful in their respective sports. An "Asthma: Facts and Fiction" section comes at the end of the text, and has a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with the disease and are generally positive pictures of young people interacting with others in nurturing ways. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more about asthma. This book and the series in general attempt to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers and are successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
