Children's Literature - Jean BoreenThis text is part of a series specifically focused on introducing young readers to health issues commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, with its focus on autism, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the disorder and what it is as well as ideas as to how it may be triggered and what it can look like with different people. The book then moves into a consideration of how people may act who are somewhere on the autistic spectrum in terms of communication, routines, interactions with others, and so on. This is followed by a section on how to provide support for a friend with autism with a special emphasis on talking with the friend about what they need in terms of interactions and support. The final narrative section focuses on two people who have the disorderin this case, Jason McElwain, a young man who scored 20 points in four minutes at the end of a high school basketball game and who now helps to raise money for autism research and actress Daryl Hannah, who was diagnosed as borderline autistic as a child but overcame that to become a successful actress. An "Autism: True or False" section comes at the end of the text, and has a short quiz that careful readers of the text should score 100% on. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with the disorder and are generally positive pictures of young people interacting with others in nurturing ways. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more about autism. This book and the series in general attempt to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers and are successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
