This text is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series specifically focused on introducing young readers to health issues commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, with its focus on diabetes, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the medical condition and what it is, the two types of diabetes, and how some may be more susceptible to diabetes than others. The book then moves into a consideration of how people who have either of the two types of diabetes "live" with the disease in terms of food and medicinal choices; this sequence of information also has a nice section discussing how to help or be a friend to someone who has this condition. The final narrative section focuses on famous people who have diabetes—in this case, music star Nick Jonas and Olympic rower Steve Redgrave and how each has been successful despite Type 1 diabetes. A "Fact and Fiction" section comes at the end of each text, and is actually a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with allergies and are generally positive pictures of young people interacting with others in positive ways. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more information about diabetes. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and both succeed. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
