Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This title is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series, which introduces young readers to medical conditions commonly faced in our world today. This particular text discusses dyslexia and contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the impairment and what it is, ways to support people with dyslexia in home and work situations, and how one can learn to live with the condition. The book then moves into a consideration of how friends can support friends with dyslexia; this sequence of information also has a nice section on a number of famous people who have (or had) dyslexia—Tom Cruise, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein and Keira Knightly, to name a few—and how each has overcome dyslexia and become successful in their chosen fields. A final section called "Dyslexia: Facts and Fiction" has a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate aspects of life with dyslexia and are positive pictures of young people handling the condition. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like more information about dyslexia. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and is successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
