Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This title is part of the "Understanding Health Issues" series, which introduces young readers to medical conditions commonly faced in our world today. This particular text, discussing eczema, contains twelve chapters that begin with a general introduction to the condition and what it is, what inflames irritated skin, how to prevent eczema, various treatments that can be used to alleviate the condition, and who gets eczema. The book then moves into a consideration of how people live with eczema, especially in coping with the itching that is so much a part of the condition; this sequence of information also has a nice section about two famous people who have dealt with eczema—in this case, movie star Brad Pitt, who had to use excessive amounts of make-up during the filming of the movie "Benjamin Button" and musician LeAnn Rimes who has suffered from the condition since the age of two. An "Eczema: Facts and Fiction" section comes at the end of the text, and there is a short quiz that careful readers of the text should ace. Well-chosen photos throughout the text help to illustrate eczema and how individuals deal with it as well as what it looks like. The glossary and "Find Out More" sections at the end provide additional resources for those who would like to know more about this particular condition. This book, and the series in general, attempts to provide a broad informational baseline for young readers, and is successful in doing so. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
